Description
This is going to be a dull offseason for Pens fans.

Bought Fleury out to protect Murray in the expansion. Not ideal, and not even what I'm predicting will happen, but wanted to do a "worst case scenario" kinda deal.

Pens protect 4/4. Forwards were Crosby, Kessel, Malkin, and Rust (left HQ and Hagelin exposed, basically ensuring that Vegas would take one of those two larger contracts).

Defense protected Letang, Maatta, Schultz, and Dumo. Resigned Hainsey as well, as he has been a solid defensemen and would be a serviceable 3rd pairing guy. Ruhwedel returns as the 7th D.

Darling comes in to take backup role for Murray, allowing Jarry to get more developmental starts in the AHL.

No big splashs at forward. Sundqvist comes up to replace Cullen, who retires. Sprong slots in a 3RW to replace Hornqvist. Guentzel takes HQ's spot in the first PP. Have about 1.5 million to play with if any of these contracts are too low.

Fleury will probably be willing to waive his NMC

Yeah, like I said, doubt it comes to this, but this is the nuclear, worst case option for the Pens.

Really like the protection list

Don't think Darling takes that low an AAV, and someone probably overpaya for Bonino. May have to trade for a 3C in that case

Darling is going to go somewhere that he can start and get paid more. He would just stay in chicago if he is going to only make 1mil and be a backup.
I think the target for bonino is around 3mil so i don't think that is far off.
The Pens will definitely protect Hornqvist though. Hagelin is expendable due to the emergence of Rust, Wilson, and the speed of Archibald in the minors. Hagelin needs a fresh start as he has lost any scoring touch he had here. The Pens may offer a pick for vegas to take him.

Yeah, probably too low for Darling. Really okay with any decent, reliable backup that can be had for 1-1.5. Maybe Kinkaid?

As for Bones, thats around the absolute max I would offer him, maybe 3.5 at most. He's a great 3C, but he's streaky as hell and can completely disappear for months at a time. Paying him over 3.5 is an overpayment and the Pens should look elsewhere. Hopefully he sees the success he's had here though and takes a little less to stay.
