Description
So 6'1" 218 lbs JT Miller is lights out this year with 23 goals and 128 hits while 6'2" 215 lbs Hertl is the same age with 25 goals and 78 hits. Miller is going to cost a king's ransom BUT can get a 3rd team retention for next season whereas Hertl is a UFA and the Leafs could not re-sign him with the limited cap space next season so Hertl is a pure rental for the assets given up for him.

Filip Forsberg is on pace for a pro-rated 50+ goal pace and has thrown 64 hits in this injury shortened season...in fact he battles injuries a lot of the last few seasons. On the other hand Rackel is a year older and is on pace for 30 goals which is a little over half of Forsberg BUT how much goal scoring do the Leafs need for the playoffs. Forsberg is expecting to ask for over $8 MIL per year while Rackell is on the books for less than $4 MIL.

MAF is the Stanley Cup winning veteran goalie where A Forsberg is a waiver pickup but he has done well enough in Ottawa and they have 2 goalies under contract for next year and could re-sign Forsberg as a UFA.

Time to move on from the amazing skill of Nylander to go for defensive depth and forward depth.

Moving for players trying to mimic some of the trades I have seen here...

My 2nd Question: Should the Leafs lose all the assets when the East is so tough to get out of?

Toronto does not have the pieces for Miller. If this is what Miller costed, every contending team would be on him immediately. Where is the blue chip prospect on this deal? Where is the elite top pairing defense man in this deal?

Leafs need a better more reliable goalie and a better top 4 shutdown D man. I personally would look at a Varlemov type (if he would come to Canada, there are rumors that he won't though) and a Manson (or dare I say it) Chiarot type of D man (I said it). Guys who play physical step up at the blue line and can play 23+ minutes a night. I know Leafs fans don't like Chiarot for whatever reason, but he is the type of guy they need.

If the return on Forsberg is only an AHL player and a 4th then Ottawa just keeps him. No sense letting him get a taste of life in yet another city when the reward for the potential risk is insignificant.

Okay, you did mention that Miller was going to fetch a king's ransom. But where's the king's ransom?

I think that you have pointed out one issue is that the Leafs don't really have the assets that Vancouver would be looking for.

The other issue for me is if the Leafs invested the cost of the assets could they still get past Florida, Tampa Bay, Colorado, etc. I mean the Leafs would be better for sure but would it put them on par with the other Cup contenders?? Even as a biased Leafs fan I must admit that I am not sure.
