Description
1.) Trade to WSH gives flexibility, shedding one pending UFA in Eller for another in Miller (50% retained). Iorio is VAN's demand and unless he is a training camp standout (unlikely) is destined for another year in Brandon before potentially joining Abbotsford for the '23-24 season or best case, competing for a roster spot in VAN. Eller gives a veteran PKer and could be dangled for future returns at the TDL.

2.) OTT might not have Formenton or Batherson due to off-ice issues. If so, they will need scoring support. Garland fits the bill as I have said many times before. 1st line scoring without any significant time on PP1, while playing up and down the lineup in 2021-22. Dermott is depth for OTT that they can extend or flip at the TDL. JBD is a nice young piece and could potentially pair with Hughes on pedigree. Will see what happens in training camp. Worst case, he platoons this season and the Canucks need to juggle around with what they have.

JBD has been touted as Chabot's future top pairing D partner for years, if he was ready to fill that role he'd already be in the nhl and sens wouldn't be looking for a top 4 RD, will be at least another year in the ahl for him. Also if we lose batherson and formenton we'll probably look inwards to Mathieu Joseph / ridley grieg / sokolov / jarventie or maybe even go the UFA route and get a sonny milano type. Giroux, Debrincat, Brady, Norris and Stutzle are more than enough to carry the majority of the load upfront.

Ottawa wouldn't have any interest in that.

They WANT JBD and not Dermott

Garland is not needed at all.

See there? Ottawa has 6 guys in the top-65 and several other guys who could get there

Watson is not costly and UFA at the end of the season, they will want to keep his veteran presence, he doesn't have a lot of value in a trade anyway

Ottawa has no interest in this. Garland to Ottawa has died when they traded for DeBrincat and died another time when they signed Claude Giroux

I actually think you're slightly underselling here.

This is the only time I've see a Miller trade to the Caps I would do as a Caps fan. Doubt VAN does it though. And only if it came with an extensions.

I do like the Caps trade, I think I suggested a Lapierre-Jensen trade a few months ago, but I do like Eller as a shutdown 3C who can kill penalties, sort of like Jordan Staal in Carolina, and Iorio is the kind of RD prospect. Schenn probably places over Poolman in the depth chart as of right now, especially in a 3rd pairing role. I also don't know that JBD is quite ready for a first pairihg role.

Imo, if we can keep Miller for something like a 7.5*6, it's probably a good idea, considering he might fetch meager returns, but if one or two of Podkolzin, Kuzmenko, Hoglander, blossom into top 6 guys, with Garland, Boeser, and Mikheyev, trading Miller to bolster our defense is a good option.
