Description
Something like this. Don't get me wrong, it's one season lol. But last summer when it happened, and now, I had/have extreme fear that down the road Huberdeau's extension and Kadri's deal will cripple this team. Even if Weeger fell of the face of the earth, that contract extension could be possible to move. A lot harder to move a guy who is lets say 35, makes 10 million and who is the Ben Simmons of the NHL in terms of him never shooting the puck even if the net was wide open (only partially joking). Kadri would be tough too if age catches up to him when he's 35+.

Never the less, I would feel a lot better about being a Flames fan if Huberdeau wasn't taking up an 1/8th of the cap for the next however many seasons. Yeah you lose an elite playmaker, but you can spread the wealth and form a better team IMO.

You can make the argument it would cost more to acquire Verhaeghe than it would Huberdeau. If that's something you take exception too, I would like to hear what you think a more fair deal would be. Pretty much the exact pillars involved in the trade, Weeger, Tkachuk, but no Huberdeau for the Flames sake. Let me know.

-------------------------------------

Huberdeau is swapped for Verhaeghe in the Tkachuk trade. Florida adds their 3rd from 2025 and their 4th from 2024 and keeps their 2025 1st

This is what I think the trade should have look like in hindsight haha. You could even remove the picks going the Flames' way, and I would still take the deal if I was Calgary.

Calgary receives:

Mackenzie Weeger
Carter Verhaeghe
Cole Schwindt
2024 FLA 4th round pick (COULD BE REMOVED)
2025 FLA 3rd round pick (COULD BE REMOVED)

Florida receives:

Mathew Tkachuk with extension
2025 CGY 4th round pick

This is turning the clocks back, so I reverted the Ritchie trade at the deadline this year.

Should have kept Jarnkrok. Tree could have afforded him even if he had too pay a tad more than what Dubass offered. Maybe a year less? 2.5x3?

Not sure about depth options as I haven't had the chance to watch Calgary much this season. Maybe sign a better depth option up front with the money leftover after the Jarnkrok signing.

Thanks for reading.

Getting Verhaeghe after the postseason he had would’ve been nearly impossible

I liked the return the Flames got for MT. But what a massive mistake it was giving Huberdeau that extension, maybe even Weager might be a long term mistake, and Kadri's contract isn't going to age well.
Flames would be a thousand times better off not resigning Huberdeau, trading him for futures at the TDL if they wanted and then had 10.5m in cap to spend this summer.

Heck, I don't think Huberdeau thought starting at age of 30 he was going to get a 10.5m X 8 year contract from anyone. But Calgary's GM Telving fell into the trap, or resigning a player that he traded for, just to try to justify the trade. He tried to fool the fans and his bosses....."See what I got for MT...Hubie and Weager for a total of 18 years and first". The much better deal would have a year of Hubie, a year of Weager and first plus 17m cap going into this summer.

Jarnkrok was awful in CGY and didnt fit their system under Sutter. In Toronto he was more free and had better linemates

I dont think he would have extended.
