Description
I've been reading a lot about Huberdeau today and the discussion on various message boards has brought up that he's a pure stylistic mismatch for the Calgary flames. But you know what team could very well be a good match? Columbus. The Jackets have multiple puck-moving defensemen and forwards who can gain the zone. Huberdeau's a passenger who can thrive in a system built for him, like he did in Florida. Calgary just very much is not that place.

This retention might be a bitter pill to swallow, I know. But no team is taking on his full 10.5, and this gets him off the team and off the books at 10.5 and nets you some bodies who aren't without skill. Also fully willing to edit and discuss, not that Calgary has much leverage. Four million is definitely high, but perhaps there is a number that would be palatable to get them out of the contract but is also amenable to the receiving team?

But Huberdeau at 6.5 to a team with a better system fit for the type of player he is? *That* sounds like a Jarmo move.

I know that's a lot of retention. But it saves you from having 10.5 of useless money sitting on your books, and the contract as structured is essentially buy-out proof anyway

No team is going to retain $32M over the next 8 seasons. Even if the trade value were spot on, Calgary isn't retaining.

Calgary won’t retain on 4 millions on Huberdeau for 8 years for literally nothing. Huberdeau have lost is swagger but he still is a high end talent and with a change of scenary could get back to is old self.

That's where I'm stuck, too. Maybe with some negotiation and other teams also retaining? Would start to get expensive for everyone, though. The best thing is probably for him and Calgary to mutually terminate since that contract is totally immovable.

It's a weird case where Huberdeau is somehow more valuable to the Flames than he is in a trade of any sort.

Retaining $4M for 8 years on a team that has the trajectory of a rebuilder at this point doesn't make any sense, especially when they have $30M projected in cap space this off season. Hanging onto Huberdeau and insulating him with players that work with his style should be how Calgary goes about this and hopefully they can reopen a competitive window within his contract. Jacob Pelletier was a catalyst for Huberdeau last season, he's been out all year and likely comes back after the all star break, making a move for a young enough guy in Duclair or signing him in the offseason could make sense as well. Lindholm and Huberdeau clearly don't fit, the most detrimental thing Calgary could do is sign Lindholm long term, big money and continue ramming a square peg in a round hole.

Depends how urgent it becomes there. They're only out of the cellar of the Pacific because two teams are somehow worse. Opening up 6.5 million for eight years might be worth it. I just picked 4 randomly.
