Leafs decline Murphy is only worth the first if he’s half retained that first will be used on tanev

If the Hawks decide to move Murphy, this would be the type of return it probably takes.

Murphy is playing 19 minutes (4th dman minutes) on a very bad team. He is putting up no points and he is losing his matchups as well. He is putting up a lot of hits, which is nice. In reality he would be or should be playing 16 minutes on our team. So a number 5 dman.

4.6m cap hit for 3 years for a #5 dman is way too expensive. And a 1st round pick is way too much also. Now if he were 50% retained for 3 years, maybe...

I just don't like the Murphy add at all.

I don't think either fan base really wants this. Murphy means a lot to the Hawks because we have soo many rookies. We need his leadership, physical presence, and a defensive dman. I'd be more open to something next season, but I'm personally not interested in trading Murphy at the TDL.

Hawks should do this while retaining 50% on Murphy. Then resign zaitsev at 11 AAV for 8 years.
