Description
Full disclosure - I'm not a Kings or a Canes fan. As a Habs fan though, I have a fairly strong visibility on these two players who have been important to the Habs organization over the past 5 years.

I wonder if a deal like this could make sense for both teams?
Trades
CAR
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc
Additional Details:
The Canes get the better player in the deal, but they are also locking up an additional 3.7M of cap space for a lot of years. At his floor PLD is a great 3rd line center, but his ceiling could have him playing wing on a top line.

In PLD they get a player who can hopefully rediscover his top 6 form and slot in behind Aho. If you forgive this season, he's probably a 60-65 point player who plays a physical game, is happy to go into the blue paint, and who really just needs to rediscover his consistency.

He did not react the right way to losing his spot to Danault, but he would not be the first NHL player to underestimate Phil Danault.

I think he's due for a big rebound season in Carolina!
LAK
  1. Kotkaniemi, Jesperi
Additional Details:
KK has proven he has what it takes to be a 3rd line center IMO. It's not clear if he can be more than that.

He made some mistakes in Montreal. He was arrogant and did not want to follow the development path they set out for him. I can't blame him for signing the offer sheet, but it added even more pressure for him to become a top 6 player, which he may never be.

The King's would get 2 years back and 3.7M in cap relief and could expect KK to play a solid 3rd line role.

The issue with Kotkaniemi isn't him or the contract. The issue is that he's a 3C, but so is Staal and so is Drury. People want to move KK because he makes the most, but it makes the most sense to move the living fossil of Jordan Staal and keep Kotkaniemi

Like your logic on the trade. But any GM would be really be putting his job on the line by acquiring PLD and his iffy play and contract. If necessary KK contract isn't that prohibitive about 750,000 a year buyout.

Those three little letters on staals name plate means he’s not going anywhere

Interesting idea here, but it's a monster risk for Carolina, especially with the contracts coming up that they have to give out to the likes of Necas and Jarvis. Something has to give if we want to keep around those 2 along with Guentzel, but if we take Dubois it ties our hands even more and if his floor is a great 3C, that's an even worse contract situation than KK.

If it turns out Guentzel wants to stay around, they should just buy KK out or dump him for cheap and move on while clearing as much cap as possible. Choosing KK or Dubois over keeping Guentzel if he's willing to sign should cost Waddell his job.

Great explanation, it is exactly why I would personally take a chance on PLD if I was Hughes
