Description
Alzner trade-
MON gets out from the 4 year commitment. Turning it into a 1 year commitment to Orpik, and receiving a 3rd rounder for their troubles.

Saad Trade-
Chicago gets out from their 4 year 6mm commitment for Saad. In return takes on Grubauer (Crawford has been hurt for 50% of the season) and Connolly, who is not a huge drop off from Saad at a 1.5mm cap hit. For their troubles, they upgrade a 6th rounder to a 3rd.

This allows the Caps to turn Orpiks 5.5mm cap hit in 2018 into Alzner + Saad, but lengthening the overall commitment of those dollars long-term (4 years). All while upgrading the scoring punch a bit and getting a more palatable cap hit for a 3rd line dman who they have familiarity with.

Interesting idea, but I don't think there's anyway Chicago or Montreal would do those trades retaining that much salary

It's an interesting thought, but I don't think Chicago would pull the trigger on that one. They gave up Panarin to get Saad back, so he's obviously very important for them to have back. Remember, they also got Forsberg in the deal to be their goalie of the future. That cancels out the need for Grubauer. While the value may be close, the fit is not.

Why would they trade for Alzner that didn't want to resign with them?

He didn't resign/didn't want to resign because the Caps couldn't pay him what Montreal could.

Very intriguing thought about Saad. He adds to our scoring. With that being said, you’d probly have to give up Burakovsky instead
