No, and here's why... Karlsson is a game changer like Malkin but while Malkin is a top 10 center in the league, Karlsson is the best (or top 3 if you wanna argue that). That's maybe a wash, except that age plays a factor and so Karlsson is probably preferable. The next best player is Duchene (Sheary + 1st and a 2nd AT LEAST), then Hoffman (Schultz + 1st and a 2nd AT LEAST) and so you're left with Brassard for Hagelin. Which is just not at all realistic. Even if you don't break it down, the reality is that 4 of the 5 best players in the trade come from one team. That right there is a sign that it's a mistake.

Brassard <<< Malkin

Duchene >>> Hagelin

Karlsson >>> Schultz

Hoffman >> Sheary

I don't think this trade is really close even with the picks. This trade guts the Sens down the middle, leaving them with Malkin/Smith/Pageau/Thompson as well as a #1 RHD of either Cody Ceci or Justin Schultz... gross.

Malkin is also 31.

This trade basically turns Ottawa into a basement dweller for years to come while they wait for those picks to hopefully develop

My mind is blown. Like Claebom said, it's almost entirely one-sided. I'm almost surprised you didn't try to add Stone in there. We'll send you most of our core and gut the team for years for Malkin, bad contracts, a late first and a first that shouldn't be there to begin with. I'm going to ignore the first round picks because Pittsburgh's will most likely be a late first and Carolina's has no business being there (Hörnqvist is a quality player, but not worth a first on the last year of his contract). I could argue Karlsson for Malkin, but then you send Hoffman (50-60 pts), Brassard (40-50 pts), and Duchene (40-50 pts) for Hagelin (20-30 pts), Schultz (30-40, broke-out with 51 last season), and Sheary (10 in his first season, and 53 in his second). I don't see that being anywhere near a fair trade. Maybe with the addition of the draft picks, and if Guentzel and/or Määttä were added in place of Hagelin and Sheary then this deal might be going somewhere. Otherwise, there's no way.

Yes it is in pen favor your owner wants to cut salary and tsn is reporting Hoffman is on the trade block. Let's think about this if they are going to trade Hoffman to save money. Is Ottawa going to pay karlsson 11mill 8mill duchene 6 to brassard I can see maybe 3 of theses players being traded by next year trade deadline. It you will not get a true #1 Center now if you can trade karlsson to islanders for John t. And you owner pay him 11 mill or 12 to do that but other than that how will you get a true #1

Now I do think pens win the trade but I look at it differently
Malkin & Schultz= duchane & karlssoon y malkin is on contract longer and is a value for a top 5 center

Sheary and 1st = Hoffman yes Hoffman is the better player but you still get a top 6 lw back and is 2 mill cheaper when Ottawa trades him this is the return I can see them getting. Now brassard you get hags 1st and 2 2nd this is how I see the trades yes I do believe pens win over all but your owner is going to sale these players sooner or later. But it is closer than you think.

As a Penguin fan I would never want to trade Malkin, but this trade is interesting. What would happen if you leave Karlsson and Schultz out of the trade and even the picks?
