The remaining three years of salary retention (1.7 mil) hurts. I don't know much about shore, so I can't really comment on that aspect of the trade but i don't really think it'll be a factor

The saddest part is that Ottawa ended up losing 1 million in cap space

The best part for the Senators is if Gaborik goes on his usual LTIR. Maybe they get cap relief that way. But as it stands, the Senators must feel like a condemned prisoner on death row. What is the method of execution you desire ,hanging (Phanuef) or being shot (Gaborik). Same result.

I think they will buy Gaborik out and save some cap space. But still retaining 25 percent how much will they really save? They would have been better off retaining 50 percent and geting some draft picks.

They will save 4 million dollar with this trade since Gaborik has no more bonus and a lower salary than his cap hit.

This move is pure owner saving money

They don't save enough cap space and retain the right players to make this trade justifiable in my opinion.

You beat me to it. Its not about the product. Its about saving money for the owner plain and simple. Owner doesn't give two shits about cap space. He wants money back in his pocket if this team isn't going to be making playoff money for him in the near future.

25 percent of Dion's contract is 1,312,500 a year. So they are really saving 2,059,722 next season, 659,722 the year after and 559,722 after that. Then lose 1,202,778 for three straight years.

Nick Shore is a pretty good bottom-6 forward and just 25 y/o.

I have no idea how you came up with those numbers lol

And it's not like cap space matters for Ottawa. Dollars do though
