Crazy Idea - Bobby Ryan

Created by: DrumMan44
Team: 2017-18 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2018
Published: Feb. 20, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade for Bobby Ryan's awful contract.

Hawks will be right up against the cap, but the rumored $80 million cap for next year plus the bonus overages rolling off will alleviate the pain.
Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Ceci, Cody
  2. Ryan, Bobby ($2,000,000 retained)
OTT
  1. Hartman, Ryan
  2. Hossa, Marián
Additional Details:
Hossa's 5.275 cap hit is only $1 Million in real dollars. With the $2m retained, the cap hits are a wash between Hossa and Ryan, but Melnyk's pocketbook gets a whole lot of relief.

2.
CHI

TOR
  1. Rutta, Jan

I get it but I don't like the idea of adding another contract with NTC/NMC protection. It will hinder a retooling and will he be in Q's doghouse? Never really watched him closely. Adding a RD is a solid idea though.

Interesting idea. I like it. Not sure about getting rid of Ceci though as he's playing well as of late without Dion and who the hell knows about Karlsson's future.

Interesting. I always felt a Ryan for Seabrook trade could work if both waived.

Knowing Melnyk would love to save money, he'd be all over this.

It's out of the box I'll give you that. I really don't like the idea of adding 5 years worth of Bobby Ryan. I mean if $7M is bad now...which we all know it is...then $5M will be bad in 3 years. Is it work swapping Hartman for Ceci? I think OTT would have to add something more. that really ties up the hawks cap space in a time when...that's really what they need. Not another Seabrook contract.

This is a good trade IMO for the Hawks. The Hossa-Ryan contract are essentially a wash except for the one additional year on Ryan's contract. He will be 34 in the final year of his contract and a 5.25M cap hit his contract is not untradeable. Yes the Hawks would no longer be able to use LTIR like they did with the Hossa contract but they will gain a solid top 9 forward that can still play. Not to mention that it is difficult to use all of Hossa's LTIR each summer.

Then it becomes Hartman for Ceci and you do gain some cap hit there. But both players need new contracts and I cant imagine Ceci is going to make much more than Hartman. Hawks get another D-man which they need more than forwards right now.

With Ryan in the Hawks top-9 they can also look to trade Anisimov without worrying about missing him.

Ryan is scoring a point every other game. That's a pace for 40 points. He's still an above average player. If the Hawks are rebuilding and looking for ways to stay above the salary floor, stay competitive, and build for the future, taking on Ryan's massive salary plus a good young player is a brilliant way to unload Marian Hossa's cap hit. On the other hand, Chicago are going to want to get back more than just an average defenseman for paying the remaining, what, $20 million? The Kings bought Wayne Gretzky's contract off the bankrupt Oilers for $4M. Surely $20M gets you Erik Karlsson, who would fit perfectly with Duncan Keith as a legendarily good offensive defenseman whose offense is declining and who no longer plays defense. Go for that guy. Play them each for half an hour a night while the crowds go wild, and draft Dahlin. Let the Sens keep Ceci, whose average play and low paycheck will fit in better with the not-crazy spirit of things in Ottawa.
