Trading JVRs Rights Away

Created by: MG1986
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2018
Published: Mar. 28, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Consider the following. Aside from Tavares and maybe, maybe Evander Kane, JVR will be the top forward on the UFA market this offseason. Using comparable recent deals like Kyle Turris, Cam Atkinson and even Alex Radulov, JVR could be looking at a max length deal of between $6.5-7 million AAV; the Leafs just cannot afford that considering the upgrades they will need to make in other areas, specifically, their defence. Finally, note that career back-up (prior to his signing with Carolina), Scott Darling's rights were traded for a 3rd round pick of that same draft. If a fringe starter can garner that, imagine what JVRs rights might fetch. I am projecting that a 2nd rounder in this draft.

I have specifically targeted PHI and NYI because they have multiple 1st round picks in this draft and both teams seem like fringe competitors who (Islanders, specifically), might be desperate to make such a move.

The key here: Leafs move up in the draft. Drafting a player like Jared McIssac, should make Leafs fans super antsy to see their future top pairing of Liljegren-McIssac take to the ice together in just a few years together or moving up in the top 10 to draft a Dobson, Bouchard, Wahlstrom or in the top 15 to draft a Veleno, Hayton or Wilde. The possibilities are endless.

As always, let me know your thoughts...on JVRs value (as far as trading his rights go), what other deals the Leafs could put together to move up in the front, etc.

These never make sense. Who would trade for a guy who can just not sign there? seems real dumb.

You could maybe get a 4th for his rights, but not that

the isles trade allows the leafs to. move up 15 spots but costs them bracco, seems to much for isles to give up. dal colle should never be mentioned in a nhl trade.

Usually the point is that they have a deal with the player but they give up a pick to get the 8th year.

Happens a fair bit actually and my "show your work" was specifically Scott Darling, a career back-up prior to his rights being traded to Carolina and signing with them. He is still not a starter. As I had mentioned, above, if Scott Darling's rights is worth a 3rd, there is no fricken way JVRs rights only gets you a 4th. Now that's BS

Phil Myers is not touchable, especially for that load of garbage.
