Roster of 21, no performance bonuses paid, This cap doesn't work. Leafs and I'm sure Tavares isn't signing that contract.

So their is more then enough room for the bonuses and that’s not even considering the fact that it’s being reported the cap will rise to 80m next year leaving the leafs with 2mil in space then. And you can sign some cheap energy guys to fill the oh so valuable 22nd and 23rd roster spots you seem to think make or break having a viable roster. As for Tavares I’m not saying he will but this deal is just one year with a contending team, why not take the chance. Hossa did this twice before finally staying in Chicago. He signs one year for big money, has a good year or even great year, has a chance to win the cup and then can sign whatever deal he wants next year. It’s just an idea but one I think is well worth thinking about

And if he suffers a career ending injury? He's screwed. He's signing a 7 year deal and has earned that. There's probably a 0.01% chance Toronto lands him.

Anyone could have a career ending injury but does that stop people from signing them? Or does it stop guys from taking short deals to bet on themselves? No one knows what Tavares is thinking if he wants long term or if he wants to win

He doesn’t have to bet on himself though. And if your JT are you taking that $14 for 1 year it are you taking the $14 for 7 years anothe team offers?

If your respond with ‘he will win a cup in Toronto though’ your still delusional, even with him and Mathews I wouldn’t bet on a cup with that defence

I don't see the value in the Edmonton trade. Gardiner is a better option for next year, and the fact that he's UFA leaves open the possibility of playing Dermott as second LHD in 2019-20 if ever the team faces cap issues. The trade involves losing two players and two prospects for a contract that is less flexible. If making a trade for a D, the crucial need is for a shutdown RHD. Some could be acquired for less than that.

Like most folks, you don't realize how Horton's contract affects when bonuses are paid. If the Leafs want maximum space for 2019/20 Horton's contract has to be on the opening day roster in 2018/19.
