Matt Dumba, Leave Thoughts

Created by: krakowitz

Initial Creation Date: Apr. 16, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is me posting ideas when I'm simping about the Caps losing :)

Dumba becomes their best all-around defenseman, signed to a long term contract that he has earned with the Wild this year. If Minnesota is able to sign JVR, they get some more secondary scoring which they could really use. If not, they still get a first round pick and two good young pieces in Bracco and Rosen.

I don't think the Wild would consider offers on him, but this is becomes a real good deal for them if they're able to lock up JVR long term.

I used some of the extra cap space to sign some veterans on short term deals to fill out the bottom six.

I think we could trade him if the price is right. That being said, we have zero interest in an undersized RW (we have a couple in Iowa), another LW (deepest organizational position), or another LD (2nd deepest position). As it stands, we already have a bit of a logjam happening with our wingers and I don't think JVR provides a such a big improvement over who we have that it would offset the issues he creates in our lineup.

So what would you like to be added to the first? I doubt someone like Liljegren or Kapanen moves, but any other prospects should be available (maybe not Grundstrom either).

I don't think they do. I doubt they'd listen on him because of that, but as I'm sitting here thinking about whatever the hell the Caps are doing, it just popped into my head that Dumba would be a nice guy for the Leafs to get.

Bracco should end up being a good nhl guy, but the Wild are stupid with young wingers as it is. As for Rosen, I'm not convinced that he will ever amount to more than a replacement level 6-7 D guy. Even with the first, I don't think you've really given MIN enough to chew on with this trade. UFA rights are worth about as much as a bag of pucks as far as I'm concerned. If that's as much as you're willing to give up, I think the Leafs would be better served making Gardiner learn to play the right side and playing him with Reilly

Gardiner and Rielly together would be an abomination. There is certainly more that the Leafs could give up here, I just threw out some pieces.

If the Wild were to trade Dumba they would be going big game hunting. A small wing prospect (who I'm a fan of), an AHL/ECHL prospect LD (yes the Wild are that deep), a mid 1st, and JVR UFA rights isn't going to get any interest.

Come one guys. Dumba is a stud young dman who put up 50 points and is still controlled (RFA) they are not trading him for your c level prospects

So then what did Dallas get in the trade for bishop with his contract up and the trade happened after they could start resigning players but before free agents could be signed? Oh wait, I think they got the rights to him so they could sign him before he went to free agency.

Some team is going to overpay for JVR and I don't think it would be Minni would have enough cap issues. I think there are too many unknown futures for Minni to trade an established RHD.
My opinion it that Leafs won't be able to trade their way out of their defensive woes this season. And really the defencemen aren't as bad as the two playoff games have indicated. Your lineup of Leafs 6 Dmen looks accurate. Marlie Aaltonen looks like a centre next year. As you suggest the Leafs need to fill centre positions with Bozak, Plekanac and Moore departing. Short term help with Filluppa and Beagle would be welcome.
