Description
The Leafs need to address the blue line. Very likely they will but no idea what their plans are. A name that is bandied about is OEL, which would require a trade. The theory is that OEL's contract is up after the upcoming season and Arizona being a team on a budget would have to explore their options. This trade would bring Gardiner in (he did get 50 points last season), Kapanen who can play right away, a really good young prospect and a 1st. I guess I wonder if this gets it done or does Arizona want a centreman instead? I threw in a few other 'what if's'. Apparently Dubas likes McCann as he drafted him in the OHL, and McCann was a scratch many times for Florida during their playoff push, Florida could potentially move him. I don't see Leivo returning, I like Leivo but with the amount of time he sat this season he likely wants out.
Just for fun I'm reuniting Marleau for for one season with Jumbo Joe, the money would be there for one year even with the Nylander signing, so why not? There may be some Marlies vying for a spot on the bottom pairing defense but Pateryn would be an economical pickup and is a right-hand shot, something Babcock has made clear he wants in the defense group. With Thornton and Hainsey coming off the books after this season, and the cap space that is already there, they have the money to sign Marner and Matthews (and OEL) long-term next season.

This is so bad. OEL has just a year left on contract, as does Gardiner. Leafs aren't giving up their best prospect Liljegren and you want the Leafs to trade Kapanen and a first too. No other team would give up nearly so much.
I really don't know how this helps the Leaf defence as you say. Reilly's at LHD, so is Dermot, and probably Borgman, so while OEL, hardly a position great urgency.
In 2019/20 or a year later when the Leafs might be serious contender, OEL is gone via UFA, as would be Liljegren, Kapanen and the first pick.

Just trying to say"term" is so important in a trade. Just read what I wrote. If you still think it's a fair trade fine. And going into 2019/20 the Leaf look like they can't sign Gardiner due to cap, highly unlikely they could afford OEL (although you should never overpay in a trade hoping an upcoming UFA resigns).

Way, way, way too much to give up for one year of the Swede that couldn't save the desert.

He is right. It is so bad.

Why would leafs give up gardiner, lilegren, kapanen and a first for OEL. OEL had 42 points which is good considering the team he played on. But gardiner had 52 points. Both have 1 year left so thats a one for one trade off. OEL obviously has more value than gardiner but not Lilegren, kakpanen and a 1st kind of more value. Lilegren is leafs best prospect could be better than gardiner and OEL kapanen is a top 6 player playing bottom 6 because no room on leafs which they should have this year and hes an amazing penalty killer. and then also a first ontop of all that? The value u just gave up would be for a player like doughty. No way leafs giving all that up especially for another LD.

I think it's an unnecessary overpayment. I don't mind giving up big assets to land a big-time d-man, but OEL is not that guy for me. Just my opinion tho as I think I'd rather save the assets and roll with Gardiner.

While term is important, history has kind of shown that if a team is getting a full-season of an all-star player (which OEL is one of), then trade value doesn't really drop off if that same player has longer term. Actually it's rare an all-star with term gets dealt at all.

I don't see Lilegren being better than OEL. OEL is a top 2 D and I just figure you have to give a lot to get him, look at what the Oilers had to give for Larsson? What trade would make sense then?
