Lehner for TVR

Team: 2018-19 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 9, 2018
Published: Jun. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lehner provides the consistent average-to-above average starter who's had plenty of experience as a starter that this team needs. TVR's loss doesn't massively damage the D corps, as the acquisition of underrated blueliners Cody Franson and Martin Marincin provides a third pairing that plays like a second pairing behind a still excellent top 4. The forward corps boasts the stars Canes fans know and love, excellent depth, especially at C, and a very exciting young RW picked second overall. All together, this team could easily take a run at the cup, without any damage to picks/prospects and with an enviable long-term cap situation.

As a Canes fan, TVR was easily our 3rd most reliable defender last year. Trading him now would be a mistake especially with Faulk halfway out the door. Canes don't do this deal imo, we can get a goalie somewhere else for picks.

I doubt buffalo ends up tendering lehner, so I'll take anything for him. He really has no trade value

      Canes pass

Best bet to move Lehner is the Isles but honestly....nobody is going to give anything for him. He is below average, Buffalo is going to let him walk. Anyone interested can just wait til he hits the open market and not give up any asset to do it. If they miss out...oh well. Half dozen just like him on the FA market.

Asking too much, TVR is a good 2nd pair guy. Lehner keeps his team in games but his numbers were hurt by the porous defense on the Sabres. His value took a hit but I think the 1 for 1 is fair. Lehner takes off in Carolina. Sabres can use this as a pitch to JvR

TVR's steady, but Hanifin already provides the strong defensive presence on the second pairing. IMO Faulk's offense and ability to quarterback the PP made him a bit more valuable going forward. That and it made the trade easier.

Shibbal18's right in that Lehner's worth TVR straight up. He's been one of the Sabres' best players over the last few years, though his numbers look ugly due to the Sabres' godawful defense. There has been speculation BUF'll let him walk, but I doubt Botterill's dumb enough to lose an established starter for nothing when teams like CAR and NYI are so desperate for a starter.

I've noticed that Lehner seems to be really undervalued on CapFriendly, and I don't get why so many people don't believe in him as a starter. All he's done in his career is put up solid seasons behind awful D time and time again. This year was one of his worst, and he finished as only a slightly below average starter. In comparison, this year was one of Carey Price's worst, and he finished as one of the worst starters in the NHL. He needs a solid backup, but Darling was one of the best backups in the league with CHI. As for other goalie options, I doubt any team's moving a good starter for picks. NHL front offices know the value of being strong between the pipes, if only because of how CAR's proved how hard it is to win with bad goaltending. The only rebuilding teams that have strong starters right now are the Rangers, who can't trade their starter due to an NMC, and the Sabres. Lehner's worth TVR.

Back in January THN ranked the 31 teams #1 Goalie. Lehner was 26th, i thought they were being generous.

I have watched him play and yes you are correct he plays well with poor defenders in front of him.
