TVR's steady, but Hanifin already provides the strong defensive presence on the second pairing. IMO Faulk's offense and ability to quarterback the PP made him a bit more valuable going forward. That and it made the trade easier.
Shibbal18's right in that Lehner's worth TVR straight up. He's been one of the Sabres' best players over the last few years, though his numbers look ugly due to the Sabres' godawful defense. There has been speculation BUF'll let him walk, but I doubt Botterill's dumb enough to lose an established starter for nothing when teams like CAR and NYI are so desperate for a starter.
I've noticed that Lehner seems to be really undervalued on CapFriendly, and I don't get why so many people don't believe in him as a starter. All he's done in his career is put up solid seasons behind awful D time and time again. This year was one of his worst, and he finished as only a slightly below average starter. In comparison, this year was one of Carey Price's worst, and he finished as one of the worst starters in the NHL. He needs a solid backup, but Darling was one of the best backups in the league with CHI. As for other goalie options, I doubt any team's moving a good starter for picks. NHL front offices know the value of being strong between the pipes, if only because of how CAR's proved how hard it is to win with bad goaltending. The only rebuilding teams that have strong starters right now are the Rangers, who can't trade their starter due to an NMC, and the Sabres. Lehner's worth TVR.
