Few things here. We are not rebuilding, we have been rebuilding for 4+ years. We are only a few pieces away from being playoff competitive. We have a very skilled young core at FWD with Svechnikov on the way and a top 5 prospect in the NHL with Necas. Same with DEF, Slavin, Pesce, Hanifin, Faulk (maybe), Fleury, and Bean on the way. We are trying to compete now and this trade does not help in any way. The new owner has already said we are not going to be a budget team anymore, in case you haven't heard. There is literally no reason to think we need help hitting the cap floor, that's just bad info. We have 3 top RFAs that need money and could easily go after veteran help in UFA. We want young players with potential to compete and that's all we will trade our assets for. Faulk would fit very well in a CHI lineup but this just doesn't get it done imo
Dude, what are you talking about? Darling is a cap dump. Faulk is not needed because of the young guys and the team has said he may not be part of the future. So there are 2 assets taken off the Cane's hands. Forsberg had a better save percentage then Darling...the Canes starting goalie, and he is young which is perfect for the Canes backup position long term. The cost, taking on Hossa's $1M salary. Cane's also get Osterle, who played 1st line minutes last season and costs $650K, a 1st round and 3rd round in a very deep draft. How does that not help the Canes?
All that said, the Canes bring in $110M a year in revenue before tax including ticket sales, advertising, sponsorship, etc. Taxes take out another $15M after write offs. That leaves them with $95M to run the team just to break even. They can't afford $80M just in player salaries. So any Canes fan that thinks they are going to spending to the cap simply doesn't understand simple finances. That's not to say the Canes are fire selling, it just means they need to put a team together that is cost effective and sells tickets, merchandising and advertising. The team was not sustainable under the old owners due to financial reasons and the new one's are going to try to turn it around. If not, they said they will consider moving the team. So all that said, getting draft picks for ELCs that are cheap, with a handful of solid core players is the strategy, NOT keeping a B+ defenseman at $5M who will command more in 2 years to resign and a $4.1M goalie with under a .900 save %. THAT'S how this trade makes the team better.
Like most fans, without understanding the financials, your gut reaction is to rate a trade 1 star based on just face value.
