IF YOU WANT TO OFFER SHEET US PROPERLY!

Created by: Juice
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 3, 2018
Published: Jul. 3, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Step 1:
Don't offer anything higher than 5 years unless you're targeting Matthews and intend to be in the top compensation bracket anyway

Step 2:
Make the contract end the same year the player would hit UFA status. This might be attractive to the RFA as they'd hit the free market sooner

Step 3:
Try not to be a crap team. Not as realistic to see an RFA go chase an extra million or two and sacrifice years on the deal to play on a non-playoff sqaud

Step 4:
Don't make a reasonable offer. Reasonable offers will be matched. If you want a top level RFA, be prepared to go a couple million over fair value. Marner at $8m? Matched. Matthews at $12m? Matched.

Step 5:
If you're not following all of Steps 1-4 above...delete the ACGM team

If someone (NYI) really wanted to hurt the leafs, they would offer sheer all RFAs slightly higher than the leafs want to pay, but not too high then offer sheet both marner and matthews.

It's kind of a murder suicide tho

They'd have to do it one at a time and have all of their own draft picks available. They cant put more than one offer sheet in play that uses the same draft pick as compensation.

Toronto has no cap space after this season. Anything close to 5X7 for Nylander or Marner and Toronto won’t be able to match.

If you want to be realistic:

Don't offer sheet anyone.

There is talk about the Islanders offer sheeting someone in Toronto, but they're not gonna give up all those picks for that, and offer sheets never happen anymore. Ever.

You have to hit a certain level for there to be compensation, but yea, it would have to be methodical and again, you hurt yourself too. But if they overpay nylander and one or two others, a 13 million dollar offersheet for Matthew's or 9 million for marner could get it done

Unless the plan is to make Toronto match and then offer Matthew's 7x15

BZZZZZT.

Anything close to 5x7 for Nylander is only marginally higher than what is hoped for

Without any offer sheets...the leafs will willingly offer Marner an 8 year deal higher than $7m

There's a lot of smart people in the front office. I imagine they've already looked at the numbers and have an idea of who/what they can afford. If an offer sheet comes in on a guy like Johnsson that's going to throw the whole budget off...they'll sooner sacrifice the complimentary players than get trapped into a scenario where they've snookered themselves on their core pieces

Matthews is going to get Taveras money. So Matthews at 11 Nylander and Marner around 6 or 7 thats having 5 players take up $40+M in cap space is tough and that doesn’t take into account the raises the other RFAs will make. Yes Gardiner and Hainsey come off the books too but Toronto will have to replace 2 guys that play top 4 min for them.

Serious question....have you actually looked at any Leaf teams created on here recently? Many will show you Matthews at $11m, Marner at $8m and Nylander somewhere close to $7m....and the leafs being under the cap.

And their defense consisting of worst than they already have or EK with every ELC they can find in the bottom 6.

Why would they want Toronto to match? There's no reason to do it just to give them cap problems.

You get them to match on others so you can overpay marner or matthews

Yes. But this assumes that leaf management are idiots and will be naive enough to match multiple offer sheets overpaying complimentary players. Offer sheets are so rare....but there's so much hate-on for the Leafs signing Tavares right now that everyone is convinced there will be multiple in play at once now.

What others? Nylander is literally the ONLY roster player who doesn't have a contract for next season... NYI would have to extend their vendetta to next summer in order to "get back" at Toronto. Which seems silly, because it's not like Toronto did something mean or underhanded, it's just business.

I'd like to think if anyone offered 5 years 7 million via offer sheet to Nylander the Leafs definately match it. If they offered that to Marner they would match it without blinking. 7 million for Marner is a steal for the Leafs.
