Offer Sheet Mark Stone - What do you have to lose?

Created by: SankFeravalli
Team: 2018-19 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 9, 2018
Published: Jul. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I post about this a few months ago, but I thought I’d give in another look now that the draft has passed.

If Colorado offer sheets Stone between $6Mish and $8Mish per year, and the Senators choose not to match, then Colorado gives up its own 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks to Ottawa. But they would still have the Sen’s 1st and 3rd rounders, and without Stone (and presumably Karlsson) the odds that those picks are at the top of their respective rounds grows even more. So for a team that’s looking to add a young, high-end winger and has the cap space and draft picks to make it happen, why not?

Why not?

Because he filed for arbitration

Even if they did, the Sens would match then move him to another team. They are not going to help out the Avs in any way, shape or form.

Good point about arbitration. But let's say he was a true RFA. There is a real danger (to Stone) that Ottawa would match the offer sheet. Then Stone is a Senator for another five years. His UFA freedom may be important to him now in a year, rather that risk being a Senator for rest of his career.

Keep in mind that he doesn’t have to sign the offer sheet. So he can hold out for a short-term deal from the sens and still get Tom uFA at 26 or 27

Yeah I'd think this is why he is going the arbitration route, he's just looking to get to UFA

You would think Ottawa would want to get something for him. But if you trade Stone and Karlsson, then you probably have to move Duchene as well, no? And there’s no way they get back as much as they have up for him. What a mess.

Oh it is a huge mess and yeah they aren't getting back what they gave up for Duchene, but he'll still bring back a good return. The other terrible thing Ottawa is doing is tying Ryan's contract to a Karlsson trade lessening their return for a premier player is insane. They should take all the prospects/picks they can get from Karlsson, and buyout Ryan separately.
