Roman Josi

Description
Nashville and Pitt deal from positions of strength to help each other. I've heard Josi might get moved, usually not until after the 18-19 season when the Ellis extension kicks in, but I don't want to wait. Maatta is obviously a downgrade from Josi, but he's still a reliable 3-4 D that's signed for 4 more seasons at basically the same cap as Josi for right now. With Subban, Ellis, and Ekholm, I think their D will still be fine. Phil is a big boost to their offense. As for Pitt they get a big upgrade on D and bring in some youth in Fiala. Smith was added for cap reasons. I don't really know how he's viewed in the eyes of Nashville fans. Picks and/or prospects could be added too.

Nashville hangs up quickly. Maatta doesn't have the ceiling Josi has and Kessel is in his 30's. Fiala is 21 and only going to get better. They'd move Ekholm or Subban before they move Josi and even then, that's not happening.

Both teams are in win-now mode though and right now Phil is superior to Fiala, 30's or not. I would swap Ekholm and Josi in this trade. I only went with Josi because I heard his name thrown out there since he'll be due for a huge raise after the 19-20 season. Josi is also 28 so while Maatta more than likely won't end up as good, I don't see Josi getting drastically better. So with the logic of Fiala is only 21 (he's 22, but calling that out is just me being a defensive prick.) and will only get better, Maatta is only 23 and should be getting better too. And is Fiala's ceiling as high as a current Phil? I don't know, but I don't necessarily expect Fiala to be a PPG player any time soon if at all. So ultimately in my mind the trade comes down to Josi>>Maatta and Phil>>Fiala.

Josi is basically their best defenseman. Better than Subban in a lot of people's eyes. I wouldn't make that move as Nashville, getting older is not a good idea. They have a pretty young core and cap space to acquire younger players.

Maatta would be their only defenseman under 25, and Phil and Bonino would be their only forwards over 30 so I wouldn't be too worried about age after this trade. Especially with Tolvanen coming in to make the forwards even younger. Accounting for an extension for Fiala after this coming season the salary will probably be close to a wash too. I don't think we're going to see eye to eye on this, but I personally feel like the upgrade from FIala to Phil is fairly even to the downgrade from Josi to Maatta considering the remaining D core Nashville has. Ultimately it helps the Pens more I'd say since they need an upgrade on D more than the Predators need an upgrade on offense, but I'm a bias Pens fan so I want them to win every trade. haha. But I also feel that it fills holes for both teams and I wouldn't say Nashville gets any worse from this trade.

Its kind of a fair deal but still value wise it favors NSH...... just dont see NSH doing it, Josi is a beast and no way they trade him

Maatta hasn't been able to produce really well, and in some respect, Kessel has been decent, but not this deal good. @krakowitz

Any trade involving Josi is not realistic. The guy is untouchble in Nashville and he's worth his status. In my opinion, he's the best all around Nashville d-man. And that's really something, cause we all know how good Predators d-men are.
