Pens-Flames trade

Created by: Pens4Life
Team: 2018-19 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 20, 2018
Published: Aug. 20, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Flames would have to part ways with their captain but he is 34 and would be getting back O.Maata who high end talent but probably cant eat up the minutes like Gio. But Flames would have Brodie/Hanifin/ maata on the left side which is really solid. Plus they get a speedy 3rd line left winger who can kill penalties in Hagelin and possibly a future franchise goalie in Jarry.

Pens get shut down left handed dman in Gio who will be sweet pairing with Letang. This builds up some depth on the defensive end which has been a weakness the past two seasons.

Don't see why Calgary would do this. Gio is still a legitimate top pairing dman, even with his age. He makes the players around him better, and he's their captain. Huge downgrade to Maata. And Jarry would be nice, but there's easier ways to acquire a young backup goalie. Hagelin is overpaid and Calgary doesn't really need him. Can't see why the flames would even consider this. Just my opinion

Agreed the Flames are unlikely to move Giordano, since he still brings a lot to the table for this team and is a clear leader. We'll see how the reunion of him and Brodie on RD (on his wrong side which he prefers ??) works out this year, hopefully they can rekindle some magic from a couple years ago.

Maatta isn’t a huge downgrade. Maatta is no worse than a really good second pair dman with potential to be a top pair. Gio probably has 2 more seasons as a top pair and then will probably start to decline. Calgary would be foolish not to do this deal. If anything the pens would be dumb to do this deal. It’s fair but Dumo is locked in as Letangs pair until Letang can’t play as a top D pair or gets traded. Even though Gio is better than Dumo, the pens won’t take Dumo off Letang.
And no I’m not saying Maatta is better than Gio right now. What I’m saying is that the 12 years younger, lesser cap hit, and long term potential of at least a great 2nd pair defenseman is worth trading Gio while he still only has maybe 2 years as a top guy. Especially to a team that doesn’t even really need him.

Fair point, maybe I'm undervaluing Maata. I just still don't think Calgary trades their captain unless its a very big over payment. Gio is to them what the Sedins were to Vancouver. He's been with them since the beginning. And since Calgary is still competing, he probably won't waive his full NTC, even for the Peguins.

See I dont see Pens doing this either.

Dumo and Tanger work well so the D upgrade isnt really that important. We maybe in win now mode but the window is bigger than Gio has top pair years left. Hagelin is hugely important on PK. And Jarry is our best TDL piece (tied with sprong?)

Hagelin is not that important on this team. You will see that come the end of the season when they let him walk.

My issue with this is the contract. He's 34-35 this season?
Got 4 years left on that deal. at 6.7 mil a year. I'm sorry I don't like that one bit.
Players over the age of 33-34 are good on 1 to 2 year deals, especially at that cap hit. Anything else is a debt trap. It's just asking to be put in cap hell.
