The Perfect Nylander Trade

Created by: DrumMan44
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 9, 2018
Published: Oct. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
...doesn't exist. If it did, it would have already happened. Leafs are best to stand pat and sign Willy.

As Liljegren and Sandin develop, management will have a better idea of what they have. If they think the mythical "Trade Nylander for a Top 4 RHD" trade needs to happen in the future, they can certainly make it in 2019, 2020, or after.

I can't wait for a tonne of non Leaf fans to start saying stuff like, "you can't afford them all" or "he should be traded for this 2nd pairing guy straight up because I secretly love Nylander but don't want to admit it in hopes he can become a member of my team in some sort of Hall for Larsson scenario."

Your logic seem to be the route the Leafs are going. I'm just wondering if a 6.75m X 6 was put on the table by one party why the other party didn't agree to it, cause it seem like a fair deal

The 6 million, 6.75 number comes from the idea that waiting until 30th of November to sign a 7 x 7 contract creates a cap hit in year 1 of 9,750,000 and years 2 - 7 of $6,682,000. Means the leafs shave of $318,000 in cap hit when it really counts.

It would not surprise me in the least if Nylander, his agent, and the Leafs brass are all in agreement that this is the plan and they have to save face without looking like they're overtly circumventing the cap. I say this as a Blackhawks fan who has enjoyed the spoils of Keith's now illegal contract and waving fondly to Hossa in Arizona

In order to not having any Performance Bonus carryover into 2019/20, the Leafs only have about 8m spend on Nylander. 9.75m for a year one salary of Nylander means the expected 83m 2019/20 cap is reduced by about 1.7m.
Hossa's contract was quite an easy one by the Hawks and Arizona. If Hossa had remained on LTIR throughout the contract, it didn't really affect the Hawks cap. The danger was the NHL might at some time deem Hossa "fit" for play, then the 5.3m would affect the Hawks. The cap deficient Arizona could take on 5.3m cap for a retired Hossa if necessary.
Long term LTIRs can affect when teams can pay their performances bonus....that's about the only inconvenience...and this year, it's affecting the Leafs more than just a inconvenience.

Good point. They'd have to flush out $2 million in salary to make room for the year 1 exception, which means trying to dump Hainsey to someone who will take him. Didn't think about that.

I don’t think it’s been put up by either side.... I think it’s close to where they will end up but I think dubas is still low and nylander is still high and both are holding.... I think we both know who will need to cave here. As soon as nylander gets close to dubas i’m Sure he will meet him in the middle.

You likely cannot afford them all and resign key players.

comparing nylander to hall is laughable and no one is suggesting trading nylander for a larsson type player.

you had the money to sign all 3, but then you signed tavares. you cant sign matthews (11-12 million), marner (7.5-9 million) and nylander (7ish million) along with tavares, thats 37-41 million on 4 guys. The fact you couldnt do what most teams do and that is lock these guys up before their contracts are up tells me you are going to have problems.

You are clueless bud. Giving the best players on your team the biggest contracts isn't a problem, its giving support guys too much money that gives you problems. So should the Leafs pay Nylander 4.5 million for 2 years so they can instead pay a guy like Tom Wilson to 5 million dollars? Or David Backes 6 million? Or Andrew Laad 5.5 million? Nah, I think that money is better spent on guys that can actually earn their salary.

As for Hall for Larsson, what defence are you suggesting TO trade Nylander for? There are a lot of guys you are suggesting Tanev for Nylander is fair. Or Faulk for Nylander etc. None of those are fair deals and everyone is treating Nylander like he's a pretty good player. He's elite, he creates tonnes of offence and he's only 22. Are you going to say that he's worth Seth Jones? No you'll say he isn't worth any good defenceman.

I guess we will see in about 10 months if you can sign these guys.

so far you are 0 for 3.

I think the point you are trying to make, is that if TO pays those guys the money the market will dictate, they won't be able to surround them with any talent. So without a doubt they can sign all 3, but will have less money to sign depth guys.

Just in case anyone else questions you on your extremely eloquent trolling, the above is a good explanation to what you are trying to say.

And the answer will probably be the same from most Leaf fans.

The reason you draft people is so you have talented young cheap players to supplement your star core players. Throw in some higher end guys on team friendly deals, (Kadri, Rielly, Anderson, Hymen etc) and you have a solid team that will be able to continue to build.

a key is to lock up those guys before their contract years, like mcdavid, eichel and many many many many many others to control costs so you dont end up paying even more.

just because you don't agree with it, doesn't make it trolling. your blue tinted glasses make you blind to plenty of things.

you can probably find 10 posts on the first 3 pages of me taking the leafs side in arguments.
