I don’t think the Caps have what it would take. The Blues are almost at that point though.

Yeah, trade assests are pretty slim in DC. Really like Vlad. It's ashame there's so much disappointment in STL. On paper you guys look great.

Oy. Coming from a caps perspective? It's difficult since he's not really a problem nor do I want to get rid of him. I'd say Orlov would have to be involved as well as Burakovsky or Vrana. Not too interested in trading him though.

Agreed. Not sure they have what the Blues need. I said Orlov and one of Burakovsky or Vrana + something else.

If they were to trade Tarasenko they would get an absolutely ridiculous package

As they should. Personally, I wouldn't trade him unless we got a good package.

i dont watch the blues much, so please excuse my ignorance, but whats going wrong with them this season? i mean like mentioned above, on paper, they're reallly good. tarasenko, schenn, ROR, schwartz, fabbri, pieterangelo, parayko, allen etc. thats a real solid line up. so whats going wrong? players arent performing?

Defense has been swiss cheese. Given up 18(!) 3rd period goals in 9 games. Blowing leads every night. Team doesnt have much fight to them. Pietrangelo has been awful. Allen isnt gonna bail them out. Getting outcoached. Really, the only thing going well has been our offense from the top 6, but even that has been mostly PP. We're just not playing a full, complete game.

Essentially they're playing a slow man's game in a fast paced league. Yeo is a terrible coach. And while Allen isn't the only problem, he is a problem. He has no fight in him. Korpisalo had a ton of fight in him after he gave up two quick ones. I'm not sure what is Pietrangelo's problem. Maybe triplets keeping him up at night. Who knows. Yeo is problem number one though. If Blues can fix that, I think everything else will fall into place.

Doesn't work on Washington's salary cap this year without 50% retention. Caps don't have any dead cap to dump. Easier to build something out of guys getting paid fair value. More like:

During this season, barring injury, Orlov and Burakovsky opens up cap space for Tarasenko. Value's pretty close. Orlov's a #1 defenseman. Plays on the Caps' top shutdown pair with Niskanen and both finished each of the last couple seasons top-30 among defensemen in even strength points. Niskanen kills more penalties, so far, but Orlov has better puck possession numbers at evens, even in the playoffs last year. Can play either side, but he shoots left, where the Blues have space in their top four. Tarasenko's certainly more of a superstar, but if you build from the net out, having Orlov puts the Blues in position to win more games, which is why the Caps probably say no, given that they already have two guys they're paying to play 1R, but no other 1LHD. Would definitely need to include Jerabek, but even so.... the Caps are left with no left defensemen who were in the NHL before 2017, or who have averaged 20 minutes a night through a season.
