All deals come in at the same cap hit (2019-20 forward) - 6.824M (give or take a few hundred bucks) with about 10.1M cap for 2018-19.
All deals are assumed to be signed between 12:00AM and 4:59PM on December 1st to maximize cap savings.

I have not defined which years Nylander gets salary and which he gets bonus or what combo of each. Mostly because I do not fully understand how that might impact the cap savings from loading up a deal. If someone knows and can explain it, I would be grateful. My assumption would be that he would NOT want a big bonus in the years he does not have a NMC (if he wants to stay in Toronto) as teams would be happier to acquire him after Toronto paid a large portion on his salary on July 1. In years where he has the NMC, he likely takes min base salary and max bonus to get the money in hand and invest it for a greater return.
A 6 year deal seems to make the most sense for everyone, though who knows maybe they can sell Nylander on additional endorsements, potential added prestige from playing and possibly winning in Toronto, jersey retirement, statue and who knows, maybe even HOF consideration thanks to media bias if he contributes significantly over that contract and puts up numbers while winning.
8 year deal:
- 6.824M AAV (years 2-8) and 10.1M in 2018-2019
- Designed to maximize his salary this year (recoup losses from sitting out)

Point is the break down of everything just doesn’t seem to matter. The leafs have cash and they’ll be happy to structure things to keep nylander happy, it’s just the cap number moving forward. They seem to be at an impasse

Nylander's a 20 goal scorer who's collecting 40 assists per season by playing with a real superstar named Matthews. Heck Kadri is a more proven talent than Nylander, scoring 30 goals playing on the 3rd line and getting paid 4.5 million.
So here is the issue.... any savings on cap hit year two and on come directly out of nylanders pocket. If he is paid bonus in year 1 we do not get the savings in year two plus, if we pay in salary he is set to lose over 2m dollars.
Think of it this way, on a 6 year deal we could probably at nylander 7m with no bonus and save 150k this in year two plus (6.85m) or just pay him 6.6m with max bonus in year one and not take the huge cap hit this year and nylander makes the same amount of money either way...

Look at the cycle of wingers the Penguins have used with their superstar player, Crosby, every time one guy tries to believe he's also superstar material and asks for an over payment, the Pens ship him out and replaces him with a cheaper younger guy. So, ahem, Nylander can be replaced by Kapanen (who's doing pretty good of a job right now) and than when Kapanen demands to much money, you move on again. The Pens have stayed Cup favorites for a decade now despite Crosby and Malkin eating up almost 20 million $ per season.

youre wrong. since nylander if he signed today is only playing the next 58 games or so he is still getting paid say 6.9mil over a shorter span making his cap hit larger than the money he made. he still gets his money but the inflated cap space in year 1 would lower the following years. if he signed a 2 year 7 mil contract today his first years cap hit would be like 9.5 mil and the second would be like 4.5 mil. crazy.

Sorry you’re wrong. To get any of those savings nylander has to take his first year in salary and will forfeit 59 days pay.
