Nylander deal options - 8 7 6 5 and 3 years

Created by: TML_GM
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 26, 2018
Published: Nov. 26, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
All deals come in at the same cap hit (2019-20 forward) - 6.824M (give or take a few hundred bucks) with about 10.1M cap for 2018-19.

All deals are assumed to be signed between 12:00AM and 4:59PM on December 1st to maximize cap savings.

Numbers courtesy this great Google sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PEWXhze7VmM7aCJJVPMxkvnKJxiSqOJ7jf3V7YxUBVg/edit#gid=1270838259

I have not defined which years Nylander gets salary and which he gets bonus or what combo of each. Mostly because I do not fully understand how that might impact the cap savings from loading up a deal. If someone knows and can explain it, I would be grateful. My assumption would be that he would NOT want a big bonus in the years he does not have a NMC (if he wants to stay in Toronto) as teams would be happier to acquire him after Toronto paid a large portion on his salary on July 1. In years where he has the NMC, he likely takes min base salary and max bonus to get the money in hand and invest it for a greater return.

A 6 year deal seems to make the most sense for everyone, though who knows maybe they can sell Nylander on additional endorsements, potential added prestige from playing and possibly winning in Toronto, jersey retirement, statue and who knows, maybe even HOF consideration thanks to media bias if he contributes significantly over that contract and puts up numbers while winning.

8 year deal:
- 6.824M AAV (years 2-8) and 10.1M in 2018-2019
- Designed to maximize his salary this year (recoup losses from sitting out)
- Protect him from being moved (unofficially) until his NMC kicks in in 2022-23 by paying him more in those years reducing the number of potential trade destinations due to real money costs.
- Deal favours Leafs as Nylander is with the team until he turns 30 at a really good cap hit that will likely only look better over the course of the deal. His next deal at that age likely won't be able to get him term and money.

2025-26 | NMC* | $5,250,000
*Limited: If asked, player must submit an 8 team list of teams to which he would accept a trade

7 year deal:
- 6.824M AAV (years 2-7) and 10.1M in 2018-2019
- Designed to maximize his salary this year (recoup losses from sitting out)
- Protect him from being moved (unofficially) until his NMC kicks in in 2022-23 by paying him more in those years reducing the number of potential trade destinations due to real money costs.
- Deal still favours Leafs as Nylander is with the team until he turns 28 at a really good cap hit that will likely only look better over the course of the deal. His next deal at that age likely won't be able to get him term and money, though more than if he were 29 going on 30 (think JVR type deal at whatever the money is by that time).

6 year deal:

- Protect him from being moved (unofficially) until his NMC kicks in in 2022-23 by paying him more in those years reducing the number of potential trade destinations due to real money costs.
- Deal favours both parties. Nylander will be 27 at the deal and able to cash in on the UFA market if he wants. Until then, the Leafs get him at a really good cap hit that will likely only look better over the course of the deal.

I really hate to break this to you, but you did all that work for nothing. Here’s how you calculate cap hit. Take the total amount of money he makes, divide it by the number of years. Done. Bonuses don’t matter, salary per year doesn’t matter, the cap hit doesn’t fluctuate at all. Average annual value = cap hit. For this year, if he signs, tack on 30k per day after the season started until the day he signed, which is a rule that avoids teams having a cap savings because of a player sitting out.

Sorry

Sorry

No need to be sorry, the numbers are salary not cap in my post. The cap is static at 6.824M in years 2-8. In the first year of the deal because of the late signing the cap it much higher if you load up year 1. This is a well publicized cap loophole. Point is the break down of everything just doesn’t seem to matter. The leafs have cash and they’ll be happy to structure things to keep nylander happy, it’s just the cap number moving forward. They seem to be at an impasse

Any salary amount past 6 million per season is an over payment. I'd trade him straight up to Detroit for Larkin who's signed at 6.1 million. Nylander's a 20 goal scorer who's collecting 40 assists per season by playing with a real superstar named Matthews. Heck Kadri is a more proven talent than Nylander, scoring 30 goals playing on the 3rd line and getting paid 4.5 million.

So here is the issue.... any savings on cap hit year two and on come directly out of nylanders pocket. If he is paid bonus in year 1 we do not get the savings in year two plus, if we pay in salary he is set to lose over 2m dollars.

Think of it this way, on a 6 year deal we could probably at nylander 7m with no bonus and save 150k this in year two plus (6.85m) or just pay him 6.6m with max bonus in year one and not take the huge cap hit this year and nylander makes the same amount of money either way...

This isn't a great comparrison. You're cetainly entitled to your opinion if you think $6m is an overpayment...but Kadri was signed after underperforming for much of his carreer. He struggled to make the leaf lineup and was on the cusp of being removed from the team when they cleaned house with the rest of the vets. He had a career high 45 points playing under Babcock his first season with the Leafs (Kadri's 6th with the organization). He's since well outperormed that contract, which is terrific. The cap was also 6.5m dollars less at the time he signed.

Nylander has 60+ points in his first two years with the leafs. Yes, I agree he can thank Matthews for a lot of that production, but I don't think it's fair to pigeonhole someone as a perrenial 20g, 40a player beause he's accomplished that in just his first two years. With the increased cap and anticipated increase in production, I think the $6-$7m range on 5+ years is in the right ballpark.

Look at the cycle of wingers the Penguins have used with their superstar player, Crosby, every time one guy tries to believe he's also superstar material and asks for an over payment, the Pens ship him out and replaces him with a cheaper younger guy. So, ahem, Nylander can be replaced by Kapanen (who's doing pretty good of a job right now) and than when Kapanen demands to much money, you move on again. The Pens have stayed Cup favorites for a decade now despite Crosby and Malkin eating up almost 20 million $ per season.

I wonder how accurate the figures are when you say Nylander a UFA after four years. He's a UFA in 5 seasons (minus two months)

youre wrong. since nylander if he signed today is only playing the next 58 games or so he is still getting paid say 6.9mil over a shorter span making his cap hit larger than the money he made. he still gets his money but the inflated cap space in year 1 would lower the following years. if he signed a 2 year 7 mil contract today his first years cap hit would be like 9.5 mil and the second would be like 4.5 mil. crazy.

Sorry you’re wrong. To get any of those savings nylander has to take his first year in salary and will forfeit 59 days pay.
