Sabres-NYR and NJ deal without surrendering a first

Created by: CuyahogaKid
Team: 2018-19 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 19, 2018
Published: Dec. 19, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Im not sure if Ranger fans view Smith as negative equity...but I do think if a small portion of his deal is retained (10-15%), he can be a useful depth 5-7 defenseman with 2 years left, and he does allow the NYR to clear some cap space for next season, as well as get a potential NHL ready prospect in Smith for a good and intriguing middle six forward. It would suck for Buffalo to add another bad deal for the same term as Berglund after Bergie is gone, but it could be worth it if it means not giving up a first and Smith has a year fewer than Berglund had and could probably be boughtout in two years.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Namestnikov, Vladislav
  2. Smith, Brendan ($875,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Middle six forward with Smith's contract for remaining two years after this season.
NYR
  1. Larsson, Johan
  2. Moulson, Matt
  3. Smith, C.J.
  4. 2020 2nd round pick (BUF)
  5. 2021 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Moulson's Expiring buried contract

Conditional 2021 3rd or 4th. If Namestnikov eclipses more than >50 points and/or Buffalo reaches the conference finals in 2019 or 2020
2.
BUF
  1. Boyle, Brian
  2. Johansson, Marcus ($1,853,333 retained)
  3. 2019 6th round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Beaulieu, Nathan
  2. Rodrigues, Evan
  3. 2019 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Casey Fitzgerald RHD (prospect and Captain of Boston College)

His father is the Assistant GM of the Devils, good chance he could sign

Beaulieu is an expiring RFA and young mobile defenseman who is included as a boom/bust option. They could use another defenseman option.

I dont want to include Rodrigues due to his versatility, but there is a need for another big forward and a player with 2-way ability who can play center and NJ could use another top nine right shot forward that can give some production in their lineup past this season.

Smith and Namesikov take up a lot of cap space next year and even after for very marginal play.

Given how hard it has been for buffalo to make the playoffs in recent years I’d have thought fans would be elated to be in a position to buy and give up futures for the present

Add Sobatka instead of Rodrigues, no retention on Johansson

That isn't a sustainable way to run a franchise. Thankfully we have a competent GM who is willing to be patient. He has stated that we will not add at TDL unless it is young players with term, and he isn't looking to move any of our good prospects to do so.

I didn’t say they should I mean Sabre fans should be excited that it’s actually a conversation they can have for the first time in 7 years

The devil's aren't taking players back. You want Johansson, it's gonna cost a first at the deadline
