Leafs would have to add, to Petry deal, just to get under the cap next year with Marner, Matthews and Kap needing new deals. Trade is not plausible for that reason

It's a cap league. Leafs can't afford to take on Petry salary without sending money back. Columbus isn't going to let two of their players.negotiate contracts with any team, Make. the trade but there no such thing as a sign and trade midseason especially for team in contention like Columbus.

I see Panarin in a lot of trades but I don't think it will happen.
Reason 1: Columbus is going to the playoffs.
Reason 2: Panarin is the one who said if a deal isn't mad by the time training camp it will have to wait till the season is over. A player who puts his play and team first.
Reason 3: The trade hinges on him signing with Montreal long term. He knows he can get over $10m. I know a lot of people here say he isn't worth more than $10m
and they are probably right but just about every team wants him and someone will pay him that. Honestly I think that team is Chicago they know what they are getting
and has good chemistry on the team as well.
But that's just my opinion.

Well, a RHD Dmen who just made over 40 pts and who's on his way to put 55-60pts is certainly worth a first and a great young player... Kapanen isn't Nylander. And your first is going to be 24-31 so that doesn't have an enormous value.

I believe MTL would like Kapanen more than a first. More like Kapanen and a second for Petry (retains 2mil).
Either him on Nylander won't be back next year I think. Too many small skilled players and no depth will make it hard for them to win against big teams in the playoffs. I believe Kapanen can fetch a bigger return right now than Nylander. With Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kadri and Marleau TOR can spare kapanen for a good puck moving defensemen. Also, I think Toronto would like to get a big guy to help the in the playoffs.

Kapanen is not a "small skilled player", his play style reminds me of Marian Hossa. Dude plays with a chip on his shoulder and is a solid PK guy. Imo he's more valuable than Nylander. With the leafs current cap issues, no way do they trade for Petry. Besides, Liljegren will be ready soon and is better than Petry. And even if the leafs decide to trade Kapanen, we'll need a younger dman back, not someone like Petry's age.
