As a Rangers fan, I'm down for that trade.

you cant have more than 3 retained salary contracts on your team in a season so this wouldnt work

If Hayes and Zucc had years on their contract, that would be a nice trade. I dont like the idea of trading 2 of the teams best prospects and a 1st for rental players

That's in regards to a team having retained money on three contracts. Not, trading for players with retention on their contract.

I see what your saying, but the Pens are all in on Win Now. Those prospects still have 2-4 years of development. I would assume the mandate by ownership is: if the prospects won't come in and impact extending the Crosby/Malkin Cup window, then they are expendable.

Ya I agree with the win now mode. Id trade those prospects 100%, but id look to trade them for players with term on their contract, not rentals

maybe youre right capfriendly's cba faq isnt very clear:

"All teams are limited to a maximum of 3 retained salary contracts per season"

I wasnt sure if this means a team retaining salary or trading with another team which retains salary

I mean...I could be wrong. That's just how I've always interpeted it.

You going to elaborate or just stick with the non-contructive criticism?

Getting rid of 2 of our top 5 maybe top 3 prospects & blowing a rare 1st round pick & throwing away maatta who is on a good contract with term for 2 rentals. There’s your constructive criticism

Thank you for taking the time to provide the constructive criticism. I know it was hard.

Now I would agrue that:

1.) Those prospects will not impact extending the Croby/Malkin win now era window, therefore are expendable.
2.) A late 1st round pick is the equivalent to 2nd-4th rounds in likelihood to draft a legitimate NHL player. (i.e. the Ryan Reaves trade)
3.) Maatta's good contract is why he's relatively valuable. Furthermore, he is replaceable by Petterson and Jusso Riikola who are on much cheaper contracts.
4.) Those two rentals completely change the dynamic of the team, create balance in the lineup, and put speed back into the roster. They would help win a Stanley Cup. That's all that matters.

That is a ton to give up for not one, not two, not three but FOUR rentals. Some of which don't even seem like that huge of an improvement. There would be 5 forward spots needed to fill next year, and you traded away 3 current forwards who are under control for next season(for cheap or reasonable deals).

A team is allowed to retain money on three contracts, you can have 20 guys with retained salary on your team as long as you get enough different teams to retain the salary since each one can only retain on three.
