To anyone I chirped over the course of the last number of months over the Matthews extension, I apologize. I was wrong. Consider this an apology for the future contract of Marner because today's news is very disappointing. This was an extension a grade schooler could have handed out.

If Eichel is making 10M per over eight years and McDavid 12.5M per for eight years, if Matthews market value is between them, he should have got the 8 year term as well. Those 3 extra years would have been the only splash of value in the deal. This contract is an embarrassment and Matthews can thank Nylander for putting the rookie GM through the grinder only to then turn around and bend over for the 40 goal wonder boy.

Chiarelli himself couldn't have done a worse job here. Unless Matthews is a perennial 50 goal, 100 point man, and Marleau, Zaitsev, Hyman, Hainsey and Brown are all upgraded for half their current price or less, this extension stunts the Leafs growth immensely.

Better hope it isn't Boston in the first round and better yet, better hope they ****ing make the playoffs.

Value? Name another team with an 8 figure player on it's roster that wins just as many games without that player as they do with. You can't.
