TOR
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (CBJ)
OTT
  1. Brown, Connor
  2. Marleau, Patrick
Additional Details:
So my thinking here is that this is a 3 team trade between Toronto Ottawa and San Jose. Toronto trades Marleau and brown to Ottawa, Ottawa parlays Marleau and half of the cap hit to San Jose for a mid round pick. In short...Toronto gets massive cap relief, Ottawa gets Connor Brown for only taking on 3 million of dead cap (which they’ll need to get to the cap floor if Duchene and Stone both depart which I assume they will) and SAN Jose gets Marleau for the last year of his career at a 3 million cap hit (which most of his actual salary has already been paid by Toronto, so dollar amount is basically nothing)

Marleau says no.

If he wanted to stay in SJ he would have.

SJ also says no, they have no cap space at all if they resign karlsson and pavelski

Marleau says No? He's not waiving his NMC for that dumpster fire of a team.

Seems awfully convenient for the Leafs...

They get cap space, a draft pick, and save $9ish mil in cap space.

Ottawa pays $$$ to retain on Marleau, and gets the same-ish pick? Mid round pick=$3 mil? No.

San Jose loses the space to resign one of Karlsson/Pavelski.

Marleau gets nothing other than a return to San Jose, so has to move his family again. Don't see why he waives?

I truly don’t see how this only benefits the leafs. They lose two pretty important roster pieces and pick just to shed salary. The sens will need to find a way to get to the cap floor imo which this helps them out with, and Marleau still has a house in San Jose and I truly doubt his family would mind moving on the pacific coast again where they grew up their entire lives. Obviously things would change if they win the cup this year, but I think if Marleau agreed to waive, San Jose could find 3 million in cap space to pay a still productive good player.

I read the trade description

You can't divide up the salary and cap, and distribute them separately. Everything is shared evenly by # of days on the books per team.

You are probably remembering the insured David Clarkson vs the uninsured Nathan Horton

They win because they get to keep their good young players. WELCOME to SALARY CAP HELLVery Angry
