Zaitsev has been good

Description
Had to make this post so more of our CapFriendly follower will see it. Zaitsev has suddenly transformed into his rookie puck carrying confident player. This year he has deferred virtually all puck handling to partner Gardiner. Suddenly he's taking on the puck carrying responsibility and is dong quite well. Leafs need a 20 minute a game RHD to be good, and right now Zaitsev is certainly 4.5m NHL good. We'll if his "turn on the light bulb" play continues.

I don't recall reading the deal was investigated but I will take your word for it.

However, I think its a bit of stretch to call it cap circumvention, mainly because there is a cost to do a move like this. Its very similar to teams that have a tonne of cap space, taking on bad contracts for assets. Either way, there are other options as well. I doubt this would happen but its interesting to thing about.

For me...there's a big difference between paying a sweetener for a team to take on an AAV you don't like....and pre-arranging a scenario in which you get to keep the player, but at a lower AAV.

Section 26.3 of the CBA outlines the notion that "pre agreed arrangement" could be considered circumvention

Nice to see people coming around besides people like @MelonVK , not sure what games he is watching. Zaitsev has been defensively solid all season and has steadily gotten back on track with carrying the puck. People don’t seem to realize that when a Dman dodsn’t Stick out in a game... he is most likely doing his job well.

"Nice to see" I mean clearly you have a horse in this race, I don't, I don't care much about the leafs or Zaitsev really. What bothers me is when people argue with small sample size and anecdotal evidence in favor of a player, who's by every measurable standard has proven himself in the bottom 5-10% of d-men since he entered the league. I don't think Milan Lucic has turned it around because he scores once or twice, I believe in the bigger sample and the downwards pointing spiral, any stretch of 3 games is the outlier in that scenario. I don't know how you argue differently.
