Targeting a different Carolina D-man this offseason

Description
What's the trade value for Adam Fox if he doesn't sign shortly after the collegiate season is done?

I know people weren't thrilled with him at the juniors a couple months ago...but would be interested to hear from Carolina fans what you would want in return...

If he isn't signed by this summer....do you risk him playing a 4th year at Harvard and losing him as a free agent?

I used a first but I really don't know what the market would be. Leafs would be able to offer him open spots on the right side as high as 1RHD if he comes out and earns it...from that perspective and given their compete windows...it makes a lot of sense to use a 1st round pick on a 21yr old defenceman you believe can start playing NHL minutes right away since they likely can't expect much more from using that pick themselves...

but what are the thoughts on either side of the equation?

What would you gents be content with to get back for Fox if he isn't signed after the Harvard season?

First off we have his rights until August 2020, so there’s no immediate need to move him, but this isn’t enough. Fox is a little under 1.5 PPG and he’s a D man....

Very true...but writing is usually on the wall when collegiate players head back for their 4th year....if summer of 2020 hits you gotta imagine he's going to test free agency and pick his spot

I believe Fox when he says he wants to play in the NHL asap...but there's a logjam on the Carolina defence...so as opposed to one of the thousands of Kapanen-Pesce trades...wanted to see what the cost would be this offseason if it's looking like he won't sign.

Can you make a counter offer? 1st round pick was more of a placeholder for this ACGM team...more interested in the discussion to see what an agreeable trade might look like

An offer I’ve not seen a lot is something like Faulk (say what you want he’s been a defensive stalwart and we all know what he can do offensively) for something along the lines of Sparks, and some picks.

You would take Sparks and picks for Faulk? Leafs would struggle to make that cap work but the valuation would be tough to pass on

It doesn’t have to be Faulk, and Carolina could retain. My thinking is a goaltender because Carolina have strong forward prospects, dumb blue line prospects and only meh goalie prospects. If we get a good goalie, then it makes anything worth it IMO

Goalie prospects are so tough to project...even someone like Sparks who's 25 and cracked the NHL this year...I have no idea what kind of tender he'll turn out to be

@Juice it’s been under the radar, but the Canes have quietly shuffled some things around and have been playing Pesce on the the left, and it’s worked out well (Slavin/Dougie, Pesce/Faulk, De Haan/TVR). I think the idea (my own, not reported) is that TVR and Fleury would be pieces they’d like to move now. Obviously smaller returns would be expected.

I think if they could move TVR either at TDL or at the draft, that makes a natural move for Fox to be 3rd pairing RHD, with a path to move up to 2nd since Faulk is UFA the following year.

I think you’ll see him sign after the Frozen 4

haha...man you guys are tough to get a price out of...I've wondered why they put Pesce on the left and just assumed it was because they prefer TVR in the lineup over Fleury or Bean at this point.

can you humour me, tho?...hypothetically let's say negotiations with him go sideways and Waddell chooses to trade him this summer while his value is highest...what would be seen as fair value?

We like to keep you on your toes. Pesce is also on pace to set a new career high in points. His price is constantly elevating. Lets also get this clear, Slavin is untouchable because a lot of people have said go get him, and just... no. Possibly anyone else, Bean is also a 1st year pro, he’s in Charlotte getting used to playing professionally. Fleury is up and down. He’s a solidified player on most teams but because our blue line is DUMB stacked, he isn’t. Ideally for Pesce you’re looking at a scoring winger+. Carolina don’t need wingers as much as Toronto need D. For Hamilton, you’re looking at a top 6 C and some prospects, and Faulk you’re looking at scoring forwards ideally imo.

Agreed on Slavin...fortunately most leaf posts don't even bother on him...but I'm going to try this one more time...let's say Carolina doesn't make any moves...when Waddell approaches Fox to get him signed he's met with resistance...he doesn't sign and indicates he's strongly leaning towards a senior season at Harvard...Waddell decides to trade him to Toronto for ____________

Considering most collegiate players don't get that much in return when they're so close to free agency, I wouldn't go any higher than a 3rd. Maybe a conditional 3rd that upgrades to a 2ns if he signs

Tough question to answer...I’m not expecting that situation but who knows. Guessing if we get there, he’d be sent to a team where he would sign (probably Rangers) for cheap. You wouldnt need to send a first.
