Description
Sabres make what seems to be the consensus trade for the summer moving Ristolainen for a prospect d in Foote, a locker room leader from Rochester (who may be a cup champion by the time this trade happens), and a top 6 forward for the next few years.

Move Scandella to MTL who needs LHD depth packaged with Thompson (and a pick if it's necessary) to bring back Shaw, a physical top line forward.

Ferland adds another physical forward with offensive upside and gives Mittelstadt the quality wingers he likely needs to produce.

Sabres have 3 mil in cap space this year, can be increased at the deadline by moving out Hunwick or Bogosian at the deadline if there's a fit or a need. The following year the Sabres have roughly 30 mil in cap space to sign Mittelstadt, Reinhart, Montour, Pilut, and any FA they feel will help them moving forward.

Depending on luck in the draft, Sabres could end up with Hughes, Kakko, Podkolzin, Turcotte, Zegras, etc.

I'm going to err on the side of caution and say they end up with Zegras at 7 or 8 and he spends a year in Roch then comes up as the 2C/3C the following year depending on Mittelstadt's progress.

I just don't know if Buffalo wants to add a guy like Ferland. I have a hard time believing this guy is worth that much. Personally, if I was Buffalo I would be afraid of this guy becoming another Okposo or Moulson on my team. I think money spent on Zuccarello and/or Hayes would be more productive money on this young and talented team.

Shaw has been really good this year so I don't imagine he'd be traded for that return. However, IMO I think both Sobotka and Scandella would be good fits in Montreal. I'm trying to think of a trade that fits for both teams. We don't have any cap dumps other than Alzner and maybe Weise but Alzner is too much term for you guys and if it were just for Weise I'd want more from Buffalo as compensation for the 5.5M in cap coming the Habs way. I've been trying to factor deal fo those two guys and Buffalo adds Thompson or Nylander in exchange for Weise and 1 of MTL's prospects like maybe Fleury or Juulsen.

Any ideas? (I don't think any team is taking either Sobotka or Scandella for just draft picks in return)

I agree. Betterall made it clear, a team is not built through trades nor UFA's. I would target low profile UFA (i.e. Hutton) as Donskoi and Williams. Both could be signed for about the same a this post signs Ferland.

@F50marco I agree that trade favors Buffalo too much. I would like to have pick, but normally, when 2 roster players are traded, 2 should come back, your suggestions seem reasonable to me. I would like to dialogue with you but I cannot reply to you directly.

It is an over payment by TB. Foote is our best defense prospect and probably makes the team next year, will not be traded.
