He gets security in terms of his paycheque for several years. It’s why he is willing to forego the chance do maybe have a better year and make more.
And in truth it makes sense. With his age and role, the odds are better that in 3 years he would be in the AHL, maybe on a 2-way deal if not an AHL-deal making less than half this amount) or our if North America (making even less) than the odds of him making 7-figures. Maybe he’s a “expect the best, plan for the worst” kinda guy. Some pros could be better served by signing long-term minimum deals, this is a great example.
