Description
Screw these idiotic messages from Melnyk and Dorion regarding the Sens will contend for playoffs in 2019-20 season. Only 8 months ago they JUST announced the rebuild!!!
If they truly wanted to contend next year, they would have retained Stone (at the very least) and maybe even Dzingel.
Duchene, well, he wants playoffs and likely wasn't going to stay any way.
SO WEAPONIZE THE CAP ALREADY!!!
Play the kids next year, get them experience playing. We will likely get another lost season but would be getting a top 10 pick. The 2020 draft is projected to be a good/deep one. Already have two first, try to get another one or move up at the draft. Maybe package late 1st with other picks to move up in the draft). Maybe we win the lottery??? LOL
Accumulating good prospects in 2019 and 2020 drafts also means they are exempt from the Seattle Expansion draft therefore many valuable assets musn't be protected and thus, Sens can keep those valuable protections slots on current key pieces (Chabot, Tkatchuk, White, Wolanin, Batherson, Balcers, etc).

Weaponizing the cap:
Both Toronto and Vegas are up against the cap next year. Toronto a bit more desperately so ... as signing their RFA's will be very challenging. Asking 1st and 2nd for MUCH needed cap space ($5M is nothing to scoff at) is really reasonable given they are receiving on fair/good defensive prospect in return. For the Sens, Lajoie is expendable due to the acquisition of Brannstrom.
For Vegas, signing Karlsson WILL be problematic as they are already projected to be $2M over the cap limit next year. Sens seem to always lose the trade when trading with Vegas therefore I think the return of 2 2nd round picks as well as the Sens getting rid of Harpur is a win-win.
Both Horton and Clarkson only have one year remaining so Sens arn't hindering their ability to sign their big prospects in a few years and hopefully locking them down longterm. I'd like to see Chabot, Tkatchuk and Batherson locked up for 6-8 yrs and White, Wolanin, Brown and Formenton locked up for 4-5 yrs and Balcers, Chlapik, , Verroneau, Duclair, Jaros retained in 2-3 year bridge deals if they are still progressing well.
Also, ELC deals for Norris, JBD, maybe even Tychonik and Crookshank if they keep progressing).
For goalies... once Andersson is gone, sign a GOOD vet on 1 to 2 year deals and play a 1A/1B situation as rookie goalies learn to be NHL goalies and keep rotating the opportunities between Hogberg, Gustavsson, Daccord and see what you have. See who does well and who gets sent down to Belleville.
BOOM, thats my idea of a rebuild

Both TOR and VGK can throw those guys on LTIR to alleviate their respective cap crunches. It would be better for OTT to take on contracts of non-injured players with high cap hits but low actual salary as they would probably get additional draft picks/assets to take on those type of contracts.

Good point. I was thinking about this and was wondering why neither team have put either of these guys on LTIR in last few years and thought maybe there was a reason for it, hence my trade offers.

I like the idea, but I think 1sts are non starters on cap dumps, I think you should expand your idea to bad contracts for 1 to 3 years and finding the tartars in the mix

Yeah, I realize an error I made in my valuations. I was looking at precedent for bad contract dumping and was basing my comparisons on this. But now I just realized that those were during the Vegas Expansion and there was alot more to it than just cap dump. The 1sts packaged to Vegas were also for them to leave XYZ players alone and not pick them during the Expansion Draft.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

All those draft picks and young players and then taking on a bunch of salary to just make it to the cap floor. At some point, perhaps the league just steps in and ask Ottawa which NHL team they want to work with as the AHL affiliate. smile

Right idea, just wrong players. LTIR basically nullifies cap concerns so there is no need for tams to get rid of them that badly.

From Toronto think more of Zaitzev and from a team like Tampa bay, Ryan Callahan. These are prime guys that both teams would like to trade if possible in order to resign some of their top end guys to new contracts.
