Exploring the Dirty Dangles Trade Idea Nylander to Philadelphia

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 12, 2019
Published: Apr. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The structure of this trade was suggested by Dirty Dangles. I'm massaging it slightly to improve Philly's return: instead of losing a third-round pick, they just move back in that round and get a fourth-round pick too. As they say in Author's Forwards in the fronts of books, he gets all the credit and I get any blame.

The idea is that the Maple Leafs take RhD Victor Soderstrom with the Flyers first-rounder.

I still like this trade. Even if it was just Gudas and the first with retention for nylander. Leafs save on cap and get a serviceable rhd and a good draft pick. Can’t really argue with that.

That's your opinion - enjoy it, tell me more, it doesn't matter, because I don't share the same view.
I've watched Gudas play for a lot of years and he's a declining asset at 29y old next yr w/ only 2yrs to UFA!!
Leafs are big time desperate if that's the return for 22yr old wonderboy Nylander...

Damn. Pro talent evaluator McGruff said Gudas is bad. Has to be true.

Although I do agree this probably wouldn't be an ideal return for Nylander.

but isn't that exact situation the leafs are in. they need cap room and Nylander isn't playing to his 7m cap. might be to big an offer by Philly.

Gudas is good but there are better options. They would rather give up more to get more then get a worse player then nylander and picks that dont help them now. TO would much rather give up nylander and maybe a pick and/or a prospect (or whatever would be needed) to get someone like provarov or parayko that helps them now and in the future. besides next year gudas doesnt help the leafs, they have lots of good prospects on defense that will help in the next year or two and without nylander their forward depth isnt the best. next season the cap will be a bit tight but the one after they will hopefully get rid of zaitsev and brown, marleau and muzzin's contracts will be off the books and most of their prospects like bracco, sandin, liljegren and duszak will be ready to be called up

For starters, the main piece here is the #11 OA pick, not Gudas. As for your prospects, I don't see any that would be as good as Gudas, if they are even ready to make the jump, which is also debatable. Moving Nylander for another player is counter productive as it doesn't help your cap situation at all. This 1 trade does everything the Leafs need to get Marner, Kapanen and johnsson signed.

The 1st round pick doesnt help them at all next season or maybe the season after. for starters sandin and liljegren will be better then gudas and the cap situation is only really one season. they might be able to trade zaitsev and brown to free up space and the season after over 10 million will be freed up giving them lots of room. nylander is a much more important player then kapanen and johnsson, moving nylander for a worse player is counterproductive. the leafs want to win and giving up better players for worse players and unknowns is not going to help them win

Clearly there is no point in discussing this with you since you are living in a fairytale land where Nylander is highly overvalued and Zaitsev can be traded. Move Brown all you want but that isn't getting you the space you need to sign your RFAs.

ok, zaisev has some value but isnt very good. you put him on a team who doesnt have anyone who can run a pp and he will get points, a team like vancouver, Montreal, detroit or ottawa. he is ok in his own zone the main problem is his ability to move the puck. he has the skills to move the puck, skate with the puck and play will in the oz but he chooses to flip the puck out every god damn time. he got points in his first season because he was played in the oz and he was given the chance to make good passes and skate the puck but since then he hasnt been able to do that. Gm's like Lou in NYI or Florida, pittsburg or edmonton value players like him.

nylander has always been better then kapanen and johnsson. look at their ages and what they were producing at the same ages. nylander has always been able to score more

I'm not interested in what Zaitsev did for 1 season. He has been regressing since. I never said Nylander wasn't as good as those 2 but when you take into account your cap situation and roster make up, it makes more sense to just move Nylander. I am 85% sure that Nylander will be moved unless by some miracle Dubas can dump Zaitsev on someone (highly unlikely).

Old/Slow/Dino in a Young/Fast/Cheetah-league.
The Nylander chip for TO should start w/ Philly's young 3/4 pairing D-men from the NHL/AHL w/ term or rights at least. If Gritty doesn't want to deal then Dubas can shuffle off to Carolina, NSH, ANH, DAL, ARZ etc. etc.

Sorry double-D, gotta playoff game to watch...
Enjoy the golf channel, I think it's a marathon of "The Legend of Bugger Vance"... starring Joke Vorachuck and Gudas as his crazy caddy!
