Description
I'm trying to focus on the playoffs but I just thought of this and am genuinely curious whether either of these moves would be allowed.

First -- Sign Marner at Nylander/Pastrank money for 1 year with heavy signing bonuses, then offer him a contract extension for $11M over 8 years that would kick in after Marleau's contract expires

Second -- Move Zaitsev to a team who needs picks and to hit the cap floor (OTT) and have them trade him back with 50% of his salary retained. It'd technically be two separate trades and I can't remember any trades like this in recent past so I wasn't sure what level of pick would be required or whether the league would allow it

Zaitsev isn't on Toronto's reserve list nor would he be on Ottawa's once he was traded..

Yes he is... this refers to all players either under contract or not. Seems like we are butting heads a lot lately but I literally just pulled up the cba and read through the section. Zaitsev can not be traded back to the leafs in a retained salary transaction for 1 full calendar year....

Now if you want to make Washington jealous.... trade zaitsev to team A... who retains to Team B who then trades back to Toronto lmao.

The way the CBA is written, it's not against the rules.

it is against the rules, you arent going to out logic he CBA, honestly if it was legal, there are people who works on actual NHL teams who are way smarter than us, and this sort of trade would have been done dozens of times by now. It hasnt bc the reasons is....Its not allowed.

Interesting, well thanks for that clarification. I am not sure what exception was made for Vegas, but I believe they were allowed to manouevre the scenario as @WookieNights proposed with Zaitsev. I didn't think that was an exception to the rule, and as I said, in the end Methot went to Dallas and was NOT traded back to the Sens, @Jamiepo.

Just to clarify because I muddied my words. I meant that methot was not traded to Vegas... therefore he could be moved back to the sens with retained salary. This is a loophole that the Writers of the cba had not accounted for.

its against the rules man, no need to write novels about it.

According to the rules posted on this site:

Once a retained salary transcation has occured, there are various limitations, such as: •A team cannot reacquire a player whom they have retained salary from for a minimum of one year after the date of the transaction, or unless the player's contract expires or is terminated prior to the one-year date.
•All teams involved in a retained salary transaction will have cap implications if the contract is bought out or terminated.
•Teams who retain salary on a players contract, will have the full value of the cap hit act against the teams salary cap total, regardless of whether the player is reassigned to the minors by their current team.

Does not say anything about this situation. It smacks of cap circumvention, but unless it says somewhere else, NO, then it is legal, unethical, but legal.

Its not allowed...holy crap does everyone think they are smarter than the CBA on this site? If it was legal then why havent teams done it already. Bc you cant, its pretty simple.
