He’s still only 22 years old. Chances are this year is gonna be just an off year for him. He’s got 80 point potential in this leauge. Jensen is very solid no denying. I wanted pit to snag him. He missed the entire first half of the season and it clearly showed. Leafs can do a lot better

There is no room for Holtby and Samsonov once Samsonov is ready. Holtby will not finish his career as a Cap. Love the guy though and will hate to see him leave but that's life...

capsin. I'm one of few Leaf fans that agree with your summary...on the Nylander, his cap hit, and Leafs cap hit. IMO Nylander will auctioned for something like you suggested. Leafs need space and a team that wants to take on some cap will be the only reason the Leafs make the trade. But if Jensen and 2nd is the best offer the Leafs get...to reduce their cap hit by 4.5m and get a competent RHD for four years, yep maybe the Leafs do the deal. I really don't see how the Leafs justify paying Kapanen under 3m....and with 83m cap, something has to give and it very well be Nylander.

Never, ever, ever trade a sure thing for a prospect who has never played in the NHL. The best prospects (particularly those who don't immediately start in the NHL) sometimes don't pan out.

Definitely don't trade a guy who has been one of the best starting goaltenders in the league and one of the best playoff goaltenders of the last 15 years.

If Samsonov comes in and proves his stuff in the NHL for a couple years it's a different story.

When you traded Varlamov Holtby has played 14 regular season games. Also neuvirth still looked good. As well Holtby played well in the AHL. Samsonov has been terrible in the AHL.

Fleury was most certainly not traded for an unproven AHL prospect. He had his starting job stolen and after being an overpaid 1b goalie for a year was traded.

Samsonov has been terrible in the ahl? That’s an interesting take on that. And fluery situation was he was traded and penguins used Murray who wasn’t proven but showed he was great in small spirts. As you can see now Murray struggles when having to play 40-50+ games

Murray won them two cups and was their starter for a year. He had just finished a 49 GP season with a 0.923 save percentage, plus as I said had two playoffs winning them a cup both times....

Also Murray hasn't increased his GP post the Fleury trade.

In regards to his year in the AHL, he plays for a perennial power house.

He was tied for 32nd in the league in sv percentage with a 0.898. That is under 900. In the AHL

Essentially your heir apparent played sub 0.900 save percentage hockey in the AHL (which is unnaceptable at the NHL level) and was a bottom third starting goalie in the AHL.

I'm more than willing to give the guy who dominated in the KHL time to develop, but I wouldn't take this year as a vote of confidence.

2) look at his last 20 games in the ahl and tell me he sucks or is playing bad. Takes time to adjust to a new country and style of hockey. Literally went from speaking Russian to learning english....

Again he has yet to play more than that since. But again your comparing someone who played 2 regular season in the NHL and 2 playoffs, to a guy (Samsonov) who has played one in the AHL.

While he started slow and has come on in a small sample size is good, and has a reason (moving to North America) is quite reasonable. It would be still silly to bank on him when you don't have to. You trade Holtby when Samsonov proves himself in the NHL. Not before.

Samsonov also played in the khl which is a much better league than the ahl. He was one of the best goalies in that league. Better than the guy in net for the oilers. I’m sure he’d be fine. I mean If hart started the season in philly they might have made the playoffs.

I honestly would never trade Holtby but IMO the caps window is closing in the next 2-3 years might as well get some picks to help the rebuild

Actually Koskinen had a better year than Samsonov last year in the K.

His year was more comparable to Kari Ramo and Jhonas Enroth to consider familiar names.

I think Samsonov is probably the best goalie prospect in hockey right now. But he is still just that, a prospect.

The last two goalie prospect who made there names as high draft pick goalie prospect internationally and developed a couple years before coming over and were considered top goalie prospects to my memory were Vasilevski and Jacob Markstrom.

Their paths were both pretty similar to Samsonov. 2/2 for NHL goalies 1.5/2 for NHL starting goalies. 1/2 for high end NHL goalies.
