Not Signing Kappy or Andreas

Created by: abc123489456456

Initial Creation Date: Apr. 25, 2019
Published: Apr. 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The leafs are backed into a corner here a bit. They are really stuck with marleau and his NMC. You could move zaitsev and kadri and keep Kapanen and Johnsson . I think the defence becomes too weakened if you go that route. Next year is going to be a squeeze, it has always been about the year after marleau retires and go from there. Signing cheap depth players to fill out your bottom pairing D and bottom 6 forwards. It's not a pretty roster but it goes by what they said which is to keep the BIG 4 , nylander , marner , matthews , tavares. After those 4 i think all bets are off when it comes to forwards.

I think the leafs will stick by what they said when they signed nylander . They intend to keep the big 4 contracts.

I feel like it's a stretch as well. Although i do feel like a kapanen for a controllable young defenseman probably makes some sense.

Toronto would need to add. Jokiharju looks like a top pair defensemen and with Seabrook sucking and learn getting older Chicago is going to need D more then they are a wing. Chicago has the 3rd pick in the draft and they will likely pick a forward, either Cozans or Podzolkin. The thoughts around Chicago are that Jokiharju and Boqvist will both be too 4 D for them. Leaving Mitchell as the 3rd pair guy they could move. Then I’d suggest Mitchell and a 2nd to Toronto for Kapanen?

So what did Dubas say at the press conference? Noting that anything that is said at a press conference is meaningless. Believe he said, " It is not my intent to trade William Nylander." I believe him, when he said it wasn't his intent, but reality sets in. Nylander has to be traded for cap reasons.

It would make sense, but they're gonna be hard to find. I'm thinking Damon Severson. Good two-way game, right shot, 23 yo and a cheapish long term deal. Idk what it would take for New Jersey to part with him though
