Description
I’m perplexed by Philadelphia’s results this year, although I confess I’m not very familiar with your team. But it seems to me that the Flyers have a great mix of young (Couturier, Lindblom, Patrick, Konecny) and experienced (Giroux, Voracek, van Riemsdyk, Raffl) forwards, some excellent prospects (Frost, Rubtsov, Ratcliffe), and a defense (Gostisbehere, Morin, Provorov, Sanheim) that should have been better than the bottom 5. So to an outsider, it looks like what the Flyers lack is a first-class goalie and a first-class coach (imagine what could have happened if Barry Trotz had gone to Philly instead of the Island). Although Carter Hart may well be the future answer in goal, this is my effort to address that position.

Please give me some latitude on the free agent signings because, as I said, I’m not very knowledgeable about your team.

The trade itself: despite the precedent of Vancouver trading Corey Schneider for the ninth overall pick (who turned out to be Bo Horvat), and although I personally think Jonathan Quick for the eleventh overall pick is a fair exchange, I don’t think Philly management or its fans would agree with me, so I have included a swap of second-round picks.

Well, shoot, there goes the whole rationale for this trade.

Seems fair to me/I like it as a Kings fan. Quick still has a decent amount of value and a resume of performing come playoff time. Would be the perfect mentor to Hart.

6 million per for a mentor. Think we will stick with Talbot who Hart already considers a mentor.

Trading the 11th overall pick for a 33 year old backup goalie is terrible business.

Backup goalie? The guy who won two Stanley Cups? He's still a better goalie than Hart.

But Hart is our starter, why are we relegating him to backup by bringing in a guy we don't need for cap space we could assign elsewhere for better value for 4 years? We need a backup goalie to play around 30 games, the team have already stated that.

The thinking is that your team is on the upswing and needs a high-quality goaltender to carry you into the playoffs in both of the next two years while you transition into a contender. Then Hart will be ready for full-time service. Think back to the Fleury-to-Murray transition. At least, that's my strategy. I can see the merit of the counter-argument.

Hart is ready now though. He proved that last year. If the kid can play, there is no point in sitting him down. Quick is a good goalie, or was, but is getting old and is injury prone (Flyers have had enough of that kind of tendy) and is on too long of a deal for too much money.
