Description

Leafs gain substantial cap room (Marleau) and flexibility (Horton) so that they can keep all the kids. Sandin is a tough ask, but Forsling compensates. No idea if Marleau would accept this, but if he has a short list Hawks would likely be high on it and have the cap room to take him. Sandin makes Beaudin, who the Canadiens reportedly covet, available - with Barratt (having a very strong college career) as a sweetener. Marleau and Horton contracts are both gone in time for the DeBrincat/Strome/Kahun/Gus bills. Hawks could pursue other moves (e.g., Anisimov) - but no need to overcomplicate this idea!

The premise is all wrong if you think Horton hurts the Leafs cap at all. So take out Horton and Sandin might as take out Hayden and Forsling too. and then it's a deal.

Not necessarily. LTIR impact is complicated, but using the LTIR exemption during the summer limits your flexibility in adding to your roster at the trade line. Hawks went through this with Hossa; google Stan Bowman on Hossa LTIR. If LTIR has no impact at all year to year, why would the Hawks have given up resources to trade the Hossa contract to Arizona. (To give just one example.)
