OK, Brown and Kapanen...what's that maybe 5.5m in cap space...still not enough cap saving, now you have to make another cap trade. Now you have three spots fill in the roster...which also costs you cap.
I don't think every fan or every GM in the NHL thinks Nylander is any higher than what it now...a second liner. I know it's subjective. Me thinks too many love Nylander "skills" but don't see that his actual production is just average to good.
If possible I wish the Leafs could prevent Nylander and Zaitsev from returning home during the summer. Both are in need of NHL coaching/discipline and during the off season.
Fair weather fans listen to what the buzz is and believe it. Before this past season, everyone was saying Nylander was right there with Marner. One bad season and he's an AHL player. He isn't.
As for you statement about Brown and Kapanen. The team with Nylander is better than the team with Brown and Kapanen. Matthews should have a playmaker on his line because he's the best shooter in the league at 5v5, we have that with Nylander. Brown and Kapanen can be replaced relatively easily. The defence may be young this season but good coaching (I am not fond of Babcock) can help that out.
Trade guys who can be replaced easily and never overpay depth players. That is how to remain competitive. Most of the contenders which faultered this year have a lot of depth guys making too much that will be hard to move. TO only really has Marleau as a bad contract and that is for only 1 more year. Just ride it out and think big picture. Moves like the ones proposed here are entirely short sighted and would be terrible.
Faulk for Kadri and 2 2nds is a joke. Faulk for Kadri is a joke, Faulk for a first is a stretch at the deadline. Muzzin is a better player and he was had for a 1st and 2 B prospects.
Pesce is much loved right now but I don't think he's half the player outside of this system Carolina plays. It happened before where I "defensive defenceman" plays great in a specific system with a specific partner and then as soon as they leave that, they are not nearly as good. Remember who awesome Mike Komisarek was when playing with Markov? Goes to a different system and is terrible. Not saying Pesce will be terrible but it's not like he's a terrific puck mover. He's a good stay at home guy with limited offense that isn't a Norris candidate. Its valuable but let's all settle down a bit. Carolina can keep him, let's find smarter options for this team. Reducing it to a 2 line team by trading Nylander and Kadri is stupid.
