Bracco for Miller

Description
So I filled out the whole team but I only really want to talk about the Miller for Bracco+ deal.

Bracco is blocked by 3 skilled established RW in the NHL and unless one goes(Nylander isn't going and I believe shouldn't be dealt) he won't have a line to play on that will put him in a situation to best use his skills. He is not a black hole defensively and from what I've read from various people who cover the Marlies is actually pretty good but he is for sure not a checker in the NHL. If Kapanen were to be dealt Bracco could possibly play on a line with Kadri but I think they keep him.

Bracco would provide cheap scoring if they decided they wanted to play him in the NHL next year or he becomes one of their top prospects and certainly on the wing. In the AHL this year Bracco was second in league scoring as a 21 year old, top 10 in points per game, lead the league in primary points, 32 of his 39 points at 5v5 were primary so he does get a lot of points on the power play but he is no slouch at 5v5. He had a 54.84 goals for percentage at 5v5.

Dealing Bracco now also capitalizes on a surplus the Leafs have at RW to address a need at right d. Miller seems to be the odd man out in Vegas and they have some other d prospects coming that they really like so this could be two teams coming together to help each other out. Vegas also needs to make some cap space to resign a few players(Karlsson, Gusev, Engelland, back up goalie) so moving out money is a motivation for them as well.

The Leafs would like Miller as a mobile skating right shot d man to move the puck and balance out their d. He's also cost controlled for 3 more years which is important to them as they have to pay their top players now. Miller had a 55.87 shots for percentage and a 51.22 goals for percentage for Vegas this year playing the 4th most minutes on the team(McNabb was 10 seconds per game behind him). So basically Vegas played him as a 4/5 d man at a cap hit of 3.875 when next year they could play a rookie or one of their other d men in those minutes and save on the cap like they have to.

I built the deal around Bracco and Miller but the pieces around them I'm here to see what people think. Holmberg I've read has a chance to be an NHL player in a depth role but he has good vision and some good wheels but lower upside. Borgman is the odd man out on d and as good as he was in the AHL this year he's also blocked by a few players. I would consider Rosen but I believe he will be with the Leafs.

I think the Leafs can find a taker for Marleau so don't get hung up on the team or return. If not him then Zaitsev has to go for cap reasons.

Im sure there are a couple teams that would take Marleau. The problem is that he wont waive his NMC to go to a non-contender. Rumor is that he will only go back to California or stay in Toronto so that limits the options there.

If that is the case I’m sure they can work something out. We need the cap space

I'm sure he would go anywhere if that team is agreeing to buy him out. Then he makes more money than now and chooses where he goes

Yes, but the league may have issue with that. It is probably cap circumvention.

I wish folks wouldn't get hung up on Marleau and his NMC. Marleau will only get traded if he retires, so his cap get traded. Even the "buyout" isn't that important money wise but who owns his 6.25m is the issue. Betcha Marleau when he sees his Sharks now, wish he stayed in San Jose.

Regarding the post, pretty good but still think some of RFA signings are light, so any cap has to be traded.

Marner might be light but I think the Kapanen and Johnsson deals are more then they will get. I went higher on them for that reason that we’d have some more cap space if they sign less.

But the Bracco for miller deal?? Anyone want to talk about that?

Marleau isn't going anywhere unless he wants to go somewhere and I think trading Bracco is a huge mistake.

Not unless he comes back to Toronto. It just happened last year with Orpik and he even went back to Wash

Why do you think that? We would be dealing from a strength to address a weakness

Marleau isn't going anywhere because he has a 35+ contract and basically controls where he goes. Bracco is too good to let go.

But we aren’t letting him go. We are dealing him for a good return to help the team

And again he holds the power. If he doesn’t want to go he’ll stay. What aren’t you understanding about a 35+ contract?

I wasn’t talking about Marleau, I was talking about Bracco like I wanted to this whole time but everyone wants to talk about marleau.

I said in the trade of marleau if we can’t move him then deal zaitsev but no one seems to notice

The whole point of this armchair GM was to talk about Bracco for Miller but all anyone wants to do is talk about Marleau. Let’s not focus on him for like 5min and talk about the deal and see what happens

Well with Miller taking a step back and Bracco tearing it up in the AHL, the Leafs are goi g to need some cheap contracts for the bottom two lines next season, I’m not a fan of the move. You are going to say they don’t need forwards... right now no but by the start of the season I’d bet money they do.

They have cheap contracts for next year(Mikheyev, Moore, gauthier, petan, marchment, engvall) and they could still bring back Ennis on a cheap deal or whoever years Ennis is. As for Bracco specifically I think he has to be a top 2 line player or he won’t be effective as an nhler. He’s not going to play over marner or nylander and if Kapanen is back which I think he will be then that leaves the fourth line. So deal him at a potential high to buy someone at a potential low
