Burakovsky for 2020-21

Created by: CD282
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2019
Published: May 13, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The sequel to the best-selling original, found here:

https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/222750

Goals for 2020-21:
1) ease prospects into key roles on defense while maintaining veteran support
2) create a 3rd scoring line by bringing veteran wingers in to play with 2019 1st round draft pick Kirby Dach
3) if Koskinen rebounds with McElhinney's support in 2019-20 and Starrett has another strong season in the AHL, bringing Starrett up to the bigs makes sense
4) have top prospects Maksimov and Samorukov continue to develop in the minors, at least until an injury occurs in Edmonton
5) sign Darnell Nurse long term

I have not yet traded Lucic. I don't know if he's willing to stay in Edmonton 2 more years, but if I can't find a deal that suits me I'm fully prepared to keep him - and I have the cap space to do so. Trading him - or using a compliance buyout if that becomes an option - during the summer of 2021 when he has $6.5M left owing to him (2 x $6M cap hit though) would ease the potential cap crunch facing the team that summer when many of these players need new contracts.

If that's all it's going to take to sign Burakovsky as an UFA after a non-tender, I think Washington will be able to re-sign him.

He's stuck on the 4th line in Washington, I doubt he's happy. Edmonton has a much, much better opportunity to offer. (This was already discussed in the last thread: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/222750 )

He's on the fourth line currently, but with the Caps cap situation, he'll get a shot on the third line. It just depends on if he's happy playing on a cup contender, or wants a chance to play more minutes in a bigger role on the Oilers.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what he decides if given this opportunity.

No. Over the past 2 years his 5v5 scoring ranks him 82nd in the league for defensemen. He was +5 this year on a team that was -42. He's an actual, useful NHL player, despite what some people think.

No. He has just 2 years left at $4M cap hit, with a cash payout of $4M and $2.5M. It's perfectly reasonable for his production.

I do. He's 82nd for scoring and 93rd for cap hit while his salary is lower. Don't tell me that's horrible value.

Burakovsky loves DC, Wilson is his best bud and Backstrom his mentor. If not qualified he will re-sign for $2.5 and play up and down the line up, mostly on 3rd line or rights traded to EDM because played wing with McDavid in juniors, goes to Dallas as part of a deal or Vancouver who wanted him a trade deadline or NJ who needs scoring.

This was covered in the comments of the last thread: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/222750

I'm willing to trade a conditional 2020 3rd for his rights, the condition being that he signs a multiyear contract in Edmonton prior to July 1st.

I don't think they can afford to re-sign him at the Qualifying Offer amount of $3.25M though, that's the point. He won't want to stay either if he has to continue to play on the 4th line. Can they get more? Only if someone wants to pay him $3.25M x 1 and then lose him to free agency. How much is that worth?

And no, the Caps aren't getting Jesse in return.

He is not a 4th line player. Only happens if Hagelin is re-signed which he won't unless Bura is moved. He could be qualified (25%), not qualified but resigned for less because he loves DC and friendships (25%), traded which is most likely (50%).

So I have allowed for the 75%. Great, I'm on the right track.

haha, I just realized that I messed up the trade on this mock. Check this one out for the original trade:

I have the pick going the wrong way above.

Does seem better, although I think FLAP wants to shed cap (likely going after Panarin, Bob).
