Leafs 20192020 - 3 Trades 1 Signing - THE PLAN

Created by: DubasAssistant
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 20, 2019
Published: May 20, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
3 Trades, 1 Signing

Columbus gets a couple talented 22/23 year olds on good contracts as they have cap room as well. I'm sure they'd love to have Nylander replace Panarian and also play with Wennberg. To balance out the age difference they take Zaitsev's contract. Leafs get two tough/pounding 25 yr olds and a very solid D in Savard. Hurts moving Nylander and Kaspri but size and toughness is whats needed and puts some sandpaper one every line.

Columbus Gain - Youth, Skill. Long term contracts
Leafs Gain - Size, Toughness, Leadership and Cap stabilty

If they have too they can even add more to get Marleau off the books. Yes he must agree to it but it should be Explored

Brown would be just a 4th liner on this team so why not take a chance on Benning who is a young RD and give Sandin and Lilly maybe a half or full season more to mature.

Bring Back Curtis in Goal

Lots of Cap flexibility for Trade deadline and some Cap breathing room going forward and into the future !!!

Interesting idea. Not sure Columbus bites on that though. I think they would move Jenner. Savard possibly, but Anderson is a tough sell. The package is there, but Zaitzev (who is effective) still is viewed as a bad contract. Kappy brings a lot of things to the Leafs line up, and in this scenario, Inwould be reluctant to move him.

If it's cost savings, I might suggest Nylander and Zaitsev for Jenner and Savard. The Jackets upgrade up front, the Leafs on the back end. You might get a pick out of that too, but I might debate it.

I hear you and of course Columbus would have to agree. I just feel they would be getting the best player in the deal in Nylander. I like Kappy but his feet are just too fast for his hands and I dont think he'll ever be more then a 40-50 point guy. Columbus is gonna have a TON of cap space after losing Panarin and Bobs so they can absorb Zaitsev's contract who is, as you said effective. RW is a source of great strength for the Leafs and we have the guys to replace them. I personally think Bracco being a set up winger might be the perfect winger for Matthews. I just dont think its enough coming back unless we can pull BOTH Anderson and Jenner considering we are giving up a potential 1st line 70 point man in Nylander who is young and going forward on a good contract dollar wise.

Personally think that Anderson, Savard and Jenner were dominant in the playoffs against the Lighting and Bruins. Where as Zaitsev was a liability on D and Nylander was silent. I think that Nylanders value has gone down significantly and all three guys from Columbus showed they were big time performers in the Playoffs. Doesn't make much sense for Columbus in my opinion.

Fair enough, the idea is largely based on Nylander regaining his form at the World's right now where he is playing with Wennberg. I thought Zaitsev actually had a decent playoff once paired with Muzzin and Kappy has showed a knack for big moments in big games. But agree the 3 Columbus players did play well in the playoffs and I respect your opinion.

What if Marleau says NO. He has that option. It truly is not up to Leafs unless they buy him out and that still keeps his cap on the books.

Columbus would decline that. Jenner is viewed as one of the leaders in the locker room and brings everything to the table every time he’s on the ice. Savard is Columbus best defensive defenseman and is the only other RHD Columbus has besides Jones, and Anderson is a solid power forward, who I think was hurt vs Boston and didn’t play as well as he could have.

Coming to Columbus I’d love to see Nylander and Wennberg play together all season and see if both players can keep up what’s happening at the world championships. Zaitzev, to me is a good 3rd pair defenseman who’s overpaid, but maybe a change of scenery is what he needs. That leaves Kapanen, I think he’s good, but Anderson is better at the same position and sane role and has a slightly better contract at this point, though things could change in the next year, and I could be wrong.

Overall I don’t see the motivation for Columbus to make this trade, though it’s also a fair trade in my option.
