Think the Rangers would do this in a scenario where they miss out on the big UFA's. 2nd and Haula for Pionk is a bit lopsided in NYR's favor but they are eating the cap of Clarkson which balances the value

Toronto would not do that because of the cap

So Gusev goes to free agency? The team doesn’t really need him, but you’d think they want something back for him

I'd think they'd make it work.

I agree if they want to take Miller, the leafs need to shed at least 9mil to come close.

I wasn't sure what his cap hit would be honestly thats just why I left him out of it...I think my idea still works if you sign him to whatever the number would be

Toronto is going to be over the cap by about $9M, as @PJosephM13 says above, which is why you see so many Toronto posts suggesting trades of Nylander and Brown (just over $9M) and Kadri and Zaitsev (exactly $9M). Adding Miller without some cap going the other way just gives Toronto $3.875M more of headache.

I don't know where you are getting this $9M figure from. I mean sure if people are also overpaying Marner by 2-3 Million and Kapanen & Johnson 1-2 million each that equals a lot of cap space. But if you use actual reasonable numbers from cap projections its not that outlandish. The totals are maybe a half to a million low overall in that one but the leafs can make it work if they want to by moving out Kadri/Zaitsev or both if they wish.

Well, he's painted himself into a very small corner, I'll admit that

Right now the Maple Leafs have 15 skaters signed and are less than $9M under the cap. Assuming Marner signs for $9M, they are at the cap and at least 4 skaters short. Assuming that Kapanen and Johnsson can be signed for an aggregate of $7M and two guys promoted from the Marlies at or near the League minimum, that's $9M. Any upward movement on those figures just worsens the problem.

@Jambo can you explain why you are trading Clarkson? He is LTIR eligible and there is not need to move him for cap reasons.

You forgot about Gusev and Schuldt. You can use the 1.2 mil you gave to Pirri, 1.3 mil from Pionk, and the 1 mil from Nosek. You can also trade Eakin and put Glass up on 3rd line, he could be ready next year. I also think Karlsson gets about 1 mil more as well

"One way Vegas can ease its cap crunch is by moving the final season of David Clarkson’s contract. The hit is $5.25 million, but it is $3.25 million of actual cash. The Golden Knights will try. Another move is expected on defence." - Jeff Marek/Elliotte Friedman 31 thoughts podcast @Caniac555

Wasn't sure about what Gusev's contract would look like so left him off the blueprint

Yeah thats the big question mark. I have been putting around 3.5 for 2-4 years. Thats what i have been reading on some blogs anyway. If Russia wins the IIHF and Gussev has some more big games he might demand a little more. But I could see a small bridge deal to see how he adjusts to the NHL

$9m under the current cap which is going up several million and without Horton on LTIR which he will be.

No, not under the current cap, but under an $83M cap.
