How to make Marner Work

Created by: Severed
Team: 2019-20 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2019
Published: May 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In 2020-2021 (considering BUF makes Playoffs):
Sign:
Reinhart - 6 years $7 million
Mittelstadt - 3 years $3 million (bridge)
Nylander - 3 year $3 million (bridge)
Oloffson - 2 years $1.5 million (bridge)
Moutour - 5 years $6 million
Dahlin - 4 years $7 million (bridge Extention at end of year)
Ullmark -5 years $4 million
or
Hutton -3 years $3.5 million
Decide on either Ullmark or Hutton, keep one and Bring up Luukkonen. Trade the other.

That creates a core costing approx: $30 million over the next two seasons.
-------------------------------------------
Subtract:
Sheary -3 million
Hunwick -2.25 million
Wilson -1.1million
Sobotka -3.5 million
Total -9.85
---------------------------------------------
So to pay for that $30 million:
-9.85 million in freed contracts
8.4 million in current cap space (ignoring Callahan's contract b/c its just 1yr)
Approx : 7 million raise in cap ceiling (this is conservative considering the cap just went up 3.5 million in 1 year and Seattle coming into the league should create a larger jump in the cap. I could go up 9 million in the next 2-3 years
Total: $25 million
---------------------------------------------
Leaves Approx: $5 million cap space needed via trades and alternate signings which is very doable

4 first round picks and 12M for Marner is ridiculous.

Any team who pays that much for him should just cease operations.

That wouldnt be too bad for the Leafs. This Sabres team is very young, especially the defense, and the goaltending is iffy. Maybe the Leafs would get a couple of top 10s while everyone matures.

Marner isn't worth 12 million.

I know there can be a legit debate about what his worth is. But he's a 20 goal scorer. That's the real sticking point on him. If he was netting 40, or even close to 40, I would say ok, there is a legit conversation to be had for 12 million. But he's not even close to that.

If hes a 20 goal scorer that means hes a 75 assist guy who also kills penalties. 12 might be a bit much but you act like hes a run of the mill guy by summing him up as a 20 goal scorer

The Hawks don’t make that deal???
Yeah, right

That’s insanely lopsided for Chicago

They trade down from 3 to 7, and for that they get:
a late 1st
a 2nd
Risto
Tage

That’s robbery
And a horrible deal for Buffalo

With bonuses you might be "over the cap" in 2019/20. Danger is some of your own RFA are deserving of "star" money, but you expect them to take bridge deals for Sabres cap reasons. Middestadt at 3m X 3year....that looks like an offer sheet coming from the Leafs for sure...maybe some other teams.
Marner is undeserving of being paid the second highest player in the league. Doubt if the Sabres are any team are going to blow their brains out for one player when they have another 22 players to satisfy.

Sorry, the dumbest reason ever for a team to "reach the cap floor" is to acquire an overpaid player they don't want. Sens can spend 4.5m and just sign a better player. Plus Okposo. has a NMC.

That's because it's a lot harder to put the puck in the back of the net, than it is to pass it to someone else who can.

It's easier when you have an elite play maker getting you the puck in high danger areas
