I see very little chance that Tampa moves Point if anything move Stamkos, they have several 4-5mil contracts that have value and it can be moved quite easily. Although it will be interesting if they do sign point to 8+mil and then have to resign Vasilevskiy next season also, considering he should be asking for minimum 9 mil per.

I know point is really good, but as a habs fan I don't like it. Taking on $6M in Callahan's contract, trading away promising prospects Poehling and brook, as well as multiple draft picks.

Just sign a UFA (Duchene).

Stamkos has a NMC. He isn't going anywhere.

Duchene is 27... Point 22...

makes a difference... You don't end up with a 33yo that doesn't produce anymore

I would prefer a free 27 year old over a 22 year old that cost you two of your best prospects and three high picks. Between Domi, Danault, Kotkaniemi, Suzuki and Poehling, we don't need to be spending assets on a center. Sign Duchene and keep all those pieces if you want Domi back on the wing.

But you end up losing Poehling, Brook, a 1st, two 2nd's $5.8M in cap space for the 2019-20 season, and point's next contract is projected to be worth $9M on an 8 year deal.

If you're honest with yourself I think you can agree Duchene would be a much better option.

Agreed to a certain extent but I'll play devils advocate here:

-Point is way younger and may be the same price just about.
-Callahan has only 1 year left and frankly rather than buy him out, I'd just use him as 4th liner. He still has some veteran leadership to add to the young group.
-As for the return, What are the odds Poehling ends up being half of what Point has shown he can be? Brook is a nice prospect but no guarantee of being a top pairing or anything. The picks....well if MTL lands Point I can only assume the would get better every year going forward. Kotkaniemi 1 year older, Suzuki coming in. Drouin and Domi 1 year older. I think there is always the risk of tanking but anyone here think Habs finish bottom 10 in the next 2 years? Not me. Even the year

At a certain point, quality trumps quantity. It can go vice versa obviously. If i'm a betting man though, I'd take those chances. There are a few scenarios with certain players and teams where a four 1st round pick offer sheet makes sense. In this case, we're losing the equivalent of four 1st rounders IMO and it could be potentially totally worth it.

Agreed: Just looking at Tampa Bay's cap situation (And playing around it it on this site), I am certainly not sure they can both sign Point AND improve their team. He is a heck of a player, sure, but signing him would mean letting go of Miller, and at least two of their defenseman, and most likely Palat (This is all in addition to trading Callahan, btw). In all likelyhood, Tampa is going to try to make this work, but boy if I were JB, I would be pretty nervous when Vasilevskiy's contract comes up in a year's time. Where's the money going to come from? Who's playing defense? Cal Foote? He's a good prospect, but is he ready for top 4 minutes? Where's the money for Karlsson going to come from? Can they survive a playoff series if they loose Coburn, Girardi, Stralmann, Palat, Miller and co.? They had a pretty hard time winning a game in the playoffs with those players, so I'm not quite sure loosing them and starting some of their AHL best is going to cut it. The only star without trade and movement protection is Kucherov: That's the price you pay for playing in a "No Tax" state. If you're going to pay a player less, they will demand a no-movement clause because if you do trade them, they'll be making less than they should have otherwise. Good luck asking Palat and Miller to waive their no trade protection, too. smile Should be an interesting off-season for them.

I think we agree to the same things, like you said "to a certain extent".

One thing I think I should mention though is i don't think the habs can even afford to sign point if they have Callahan. Then theres the lost savings on Poehling and Brooks ELC / RFA years, and the lost flow of talent from those picks.

Like I argued earlier, adding Duchene makes this team better today and doesn't hurt the future (unless at 33 years old he is crap, but he should be serviceable).

Adding Point, makes this team better short term, but seriously hurts the future.

I thinks it a no contest if you ask what the better move would be.
