and look how that worked out for the black hawks now, learn from other teams mistakes dont redo them. for that money trade him away.

Blackhawks hit their peak and paid their star players. Leafs are just entering their peak. So lets see how letting Marner walk effects your teams future.

Kane's deal was buying UFA years, so with the cap increase, I think Marner will end up around where Kane did.

Very possible. Its also possible he stands firm on more.

My point was he is never going to sign a bridge deal to bail Dubas out of this crap situation.

$10.5m is manageable if Johnsson and Kapanen want around $3m. They'll need to trade Brown, Kadri, Johnsson, and/or Kapanen to be cap compliant and likely won't make any roster upgrades but it can be done. There have been quite a few ACGMs that work without trading Marleau or Zaitsev either

And Dubas is such a firm negotiator, look at the sweet deal he got on Matthews and Nylander..

nylander is a good deal within a percent or two, matthews contract we will have to wait and see there are no comparables for his. mcdavis is alot better and makes alot more. once laine signs it will make it alittle easier to see where the contract stands.

what they should do is give him 2 offers a short term and a long term, tell him this is what we can afford. if he says its not enough then you trade him before the draft. if he accepts then you are good. there is no point in letting it go to offer sheet time because thats when everyone looses.

marner signs for the same cap percentage as NIKITA KUCHEROV and for one less year. if someone offer sheets him and he accepts they match and trade him.

Can't trade a player for one year after you match their offer sheet

In those 3 deals, he set the market for Marner… Don't blame the player for asking for what he is worth.

The only winger in that list is nylander... 6.9m....

My favorite is when Leaf fans expect to get a Kings ransom in a trade for him, but think it's ridiculous for him to want a lot of money. Is he super valuable or not?

What’s funny is your lack of vision. More disappointing than anything really.

Most leafs fans would be fine with a deal between 9-10m making him the 2nd highest paid winger in the nhl and the highest paid winger out of an elc contract ever. How is wanting a fair return on a player who commands that in any way out of line?

Personally if he will not sign for 10.5m or less we are better of trading or taking the compensation. Regardless of anything you want to call trading from weakness his value is 4 1st round picks. So if the trade isn’t the same value why would we not just wait for an offer sheet. If one doesn’t come marner will have no power in negotiations.

$6.9m after a 61 point season, $10.5m after a 94 point season seems about right then.

It's the concept of what a "fair return" even is. Using offer sheet compensation, he's not worth 4 1st round picks if he signs for less than $10.5m or 5 years so unless you're ok with him getting $10.5m+ for 6 or 7 years, you can forget him being worth 4 1st round picks. That being said, no one is suggesting he's traded straight up for 4 1st round picks because no one is going to sacrifice drafting for 4 straight seasons unless they're a contender and those teams likely wouldn't be able to afford Marner's salary. What Leaf fans are suggesting is situations like Marner for a solid defenseman with a reasonable cap hit and term (Dumba, Pesce), another quality player (Greenway, Teravainen) and then a 1st round pick and some other picks tossed in which is insane. The Leafs paid a 1st round pick and a couple prospects of varying worth for Muzzin, so that should at least give you an idea what a quality defenseman goes for. Defense is almost always more expensive than wingers because quality defenders on good contracts are harder to come by.

Back to back 61 point seasons or a 69 to 94 point season with Tavares at centre. Yes I do agree that 10.5m is the max. Players aren’t paid by points though. The comparables all point to a 9-9.5m contract. Not that marner has to accept that. But leafs don’t have to either.

They're not paid by points alone always, but when they score a lot of points, it makes it really easy for their agent to justify asking for more regardless of how they came by those points..

He can definitely ask for it, and there is a precedent for top wingers getting top dollars.
