Honestly, I do wish STL well.. until we meet in the 2020 finals.

Explanations:

Marleau - Could be LA/Arizona/maybe COL, but it was done for Datsyuk three years ago..why not Marleau? Atleast Marleau will play it out.

Pietrangelo - revisiting the old trade deadline rumor.. basing this trade on STL not winning the 2019-20 cup. STL moves Parayko to 1st line D & slips Zaitsev in as his replacement.
Kapanen moves in as 2/3 RW
Receives two 1st rounders pending extension or resigning of Pietrangelo.
What does Doug do?

Benning - typical trade on many Leafs/Oilers ACGMs; RHD a position of need.

Little bit of room to adjust on Marner/Johnsson contracts if need be.

Added in the resigning of Hainsey, with Marleau gone we could use atleast one vet. Could look at signing Phaneuf instead maybe if he is bought out? Thoughts?

The only reason this was a rumour to begin with was because STL was having a rough start to the year. They have no incentive whatsoever to do this trade now, and they're downgrading massively on defense to fit Kapanen into their already pretty stacked forward group. This makes less than no sense for St.Louis

That's a lot to pay for one year of Pietrangelo. Can't you just wait a year and see what's available in 2020.

An actual RHD? Like who Liljegren? Holl? Hollowell?
If we want to suffer through 2019-20 yes but my ACGM is based on a hypothetical early cup run.. not looking for a lottery pick.

We need to stop p$&@y footing it, and go for it.
I agree he could potentially be picked up next offseason but this was based on 2019-20 run for cup. And only if he’d guarantee extension or resign.
We won’t be there with a Marlies based defense.

Hahaha I had to toss it in on Phaneuf, I wanted someone to beak at me.

I would say the Leafs are no where near a Cup contender in 2019/20 due to the departing UFAs and cap situation. Just no way to spin it to make them better next year. Same the ammo for future years.
What I say next meanings nothing, and good for the Blues for being in the finals. Leafs GAA against the Bruins is better than the Blues. But some many have this illusion that this one magic man known as RHD is going to vault the Leafs to the Cup.

But those are entirely different questions.

Does STL want Kapanen in a vacuum? Sure.
Does STL want Kapanen if it means losing Pietrangelo, their captain and a legit #1 D, while also taking on Zaitsev? I'm sure they don't.
