Probably the best I can hope for right now

Description
I sort of get the Gudas - Niskanen trade and I don't think anyone should be too shocked that Gudas got moved but Niskanen is a shadow on the the player he was. He fits the style they're going for more I think but he's barely a top 4 guy these days. Sanheim has proven he can play well with far less skilled players (MacDonald and Gudas) though so hopefully that bodes well.

The big issue is the cap retention on Gudas. It just doesn't leave a whole lot to make a big splash having taken on an additional $3.4m (i.e. maybe going for Trouba unless you move Ghost).

All feels a bit meh.

Youre not getting Paul for that man... The only way for MTL to trade him to phi is in a trade including the gosth

With the that cap, few expiring contracts, and maybe some big money RFAs coming 2020/21, having Byron and Nickanen might be luxury the Flyers can't afford.

He's a 3rd line winger who's 30 years old and was hurt a lot last season. That Ghost rumor was ridiculous and made zero sense for the Flyers. A Ghost for Drouin trade is close to even, not a Ghost for Byron.

I hadn't factored that in too much but you might be right. They'd have about $8.5m to re-sign Myers, Patrick, and Lindblom which isn't loads but not nothing either. I doubt Myers gets loads coming off his 1st full season essentially as a 5/6 on the D depth chart. Similarly with Patrick, unless he blows the doors off in a 3rd line role, might be a cheaper bridge deal. Lindblom is the only one I could see getting in the long term $4-5m range but obviously a whole lot could change this coming season.

Also, some of the prospects are going to have to get squeezed in at some point. That means moving someone who is invariably earning more.

Also I'm against buying out MacDonald precisely for the cap reasons you've stated - we should be trying to find a trade partner for him (with retained salary I'd necessary) but it just sounds like it's heading to a buyout.
